Alec Schaefer, a 4th year Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) co-op student was selected to participate in the annual Young Hospitality Summit (YHS) case competition that was held from March 11th – 13th, 2024.

The Young Hospitality Summit is an annual conference hosted by Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, that focuses on the hospitality industry in commerce, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility.

YHS gathers students from the top hotel schools from around the world. The competition event includes panel discussions, keynote speakers, workshops and more.

In this Q&A session, Alec describes his YHS experience, highlights, presentation and advice for future students interested in the competition.

“The Young Hospitality Summit was truly a deeply enriching experience for me. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting many motivated, engaged and like-minded students from around the world while listening to some of the top trailblazers in the hospitality industry speak on groundbreaking topics. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with my fellow delegates to present a revolutionary idea to a panel of judges from NEOM.”

Andrea Lee, a 5th year Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) co-op student was selected to participate in the annual Young Hospitality Summit (YHS) case competition that was held from March 11th – 13th.

“The highlight of YHS was the friends and lifetime connections I made. From getting on the transit to EHL, to the very end at the gala, I will never take these connections for granted. Our similar passions, beliefs, and strong critical thinking on industry issues brought us together, no matter the cultural differences we came from. They have truly reignited the spark within me and inspired me for what I want to do as an upcoming leader within the industry.”

Rui is a 4th year Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major. Rui shares with us, “Receiving this award holds value for me as it acknowledges the commitment and effort I've dedicated to my studies. It reflects the acknowledgment of the time and hard work I've devoted to reaching success.”

To future students, Rui suggests embracing the saying, “no pain, no gain”. “Achieving success requires sacrifices and diligence. Remain disciplined and stay focused. Always recognize the importance of determination. Aim high in setting your goals. Be willing to challenge yourself to reach them.”

Congratulations to Alec Schaefer, recipient of the 2023/24 Big Picture Conference Scholarship. ⭐

Alec is a 4th year Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major, as well as a co-op student. “The Big Picture Conference Scholarship means so much to me as it helped me fund my trip to the Young Hospitality Summit in Switzerland earlier this month. This award went a long way in allowing me to meet many motivated, engaged, and like-minded students worldwide while listening to some of the top trailblazers in the hospitality industry speak on groundbreaking topics. For that reason, I am very grateful to have been selected for this honour and am so proud to be able to represent the University of Guelph as the recipient.”

The advice he would give to new students is to simply say yes. ”Say yes to opportunities that come your way. Say yes to learning new skills and expanding your network. Most importantly, say yes to stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new.”

Congratulations to Adriana (Addy) Malpas, recipient of the 2023/24 Dorothy Shantz Memorial 3rd Year Scholarship. ⭐

Addy is a Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major, graduating in 2025. Addy shares, “This award serves as a validation of my accomplishments. This past fall I was able to execute many successful events for the HTM student body alongside an incredible team. This award signifies a recognition of these efforts I put into the Hospitality and Tourism Student Association as the director of charitable and academic events.”

A piece of advice that Addy would give to students is to, “Take advantage of every opportunity presented to you. U of G will present you with many valuable opportunities throughout your time and it is important to take advantage of them because they will only benefit you in the future and add to your value.”

Adrianna is a Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major in her fourth year. She shares with us, “It is an honour to have been chosen for the Dorothy Shantz Memorial Scholarship and, it is with great appreciation to receive this recognition and validation for hard work and involvement in my school community. It is a great acknowledgment that someone believes in my potential and wants to invest in my future.”

Some advice that she would give to other students is to, “Never be afraid of trying new things and taking risks. As a transfer student, I was unsure what path I wanted to take. But I’m so glad that I took the risk to change programs because I am exactly in the field that I want to be and doing what I love.”

Alyssa is a Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major, as well as a 5th year co-op student. She is extremely honoured and grateful to be receiving this award. “This scholarship motivates me to make the most of the opportunities presented to me and strive for excellence in my personal and professional life. It is also a reminder of the amazing support that I have and the shared passion that we all have for this incredible industry.”

Alyssa’s advice for students, “Don’t be afraid of asking for what you want, whether that is a new job, position, or learning opportunity, as you are capable of way more than you think. Also, don’t be afraid of change, as it’s important to learn what you don’t like, just as much as learning what you like.”

Saige is a 1st year Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major, as well as a co-op student. Saige shares with us that her award holds great meaning and that it has opened a whole new world of opportunities. “Similar to many Hospitality and Tourism Management students, my passion for this field is hard to deny, and the support provided for my education is immensely valuable. The scholarship, especially from an organization as influential as Smart Serve Ontario, inspires me to further my growth within the industry and actively engage with the community around me.”

Saige’s advice to fellow students, “Is to seize every opportunity that comes your way during your time in school, even if it pushes you beyond your comfort zone. Whether it's joining your student association, participating in events, or exploring other options, each experience can provide extremely valuable learning opportunities and allow you to

Congratulations to Steven Szep, recipient of the 2023/24 Mandarin Restaurants Scholarship! ⭐

Steven is a Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) major in his 4th year, as well as a co-op student. “My award means I can further improve my knowledge of the hospitality and tourism industry and continue to focus on my studies on what I love to do most. It gives me a sense of perseverance and encouragement to be the best version of myself, along with the confidence to move forward with my degree.”

As Steven finishes his 4th year, the biggest piece of advice he would give to students, “is to always say yes to any opportunity that comes your way. You never know who you will end up working with throughout your career, and saying yes will allow you to meet and network with like-minded industry professionals. It also helps to get your name out there and make yourself stand out from the crowd.”

This past weekend, we had three teams of HTM students travel to Montreal for the Hospitality and Tourism Case Competition (HTCC).

Our students competed against Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Special thank you to Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) for hosting and to Professor Foti for coaching and preparing our delegates this semester.👏

We’ll be joined by Chef Warren Ford who will be showing us how to prepare pan roasted jerk chicken with coconut rice and peas, coleslaw and a guava vinaigrette. Congratulations to Andrea Lee & Alec Schaefer, representing HFTM, Lang, and the U of G at the 2024 Young Hospitality Summit (YHS) next month in Switzerland! 🎉

Hosted at the EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne from March 11th to March 13th, it is the largest student-led hospitality summit in the world. 🌐

Andrea Lee (HTM ’24 Co-op) hopes to gain new connections and a memorable experience through all the activities and events, alongside Alec. Andrea believes “YHS provides a unique opportunity to connect with individuals on a global scale” and that it will expand her knowledge about the industry and its potential.

Alec Schaefer (HTM '25 Co-op) is excited to experience the rich and diverse learning opportunities that YHS 2024 has to offer. Alec is "very excited to represent the University of Guelph and the Lang School of Business alongside Andrea to the best of my ability. We are pleased to share that Dr. Sara Mann will start a five-year appointment as Dean, Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, effective February 12th, 2024! Dr. Mann has a proven track record of exceptional leadership and since May 2022, has served as the interim Dean.

“It is a tremendous honour to continue to serve as Dean for Lang”, shares Dr. Mann. “Business as a force for good is in our DNA and our students gain a unique understanding of how responsible and sustainable business practices can Improve Life here in Guelph and around the world. January's Deep Dish Dialogues will be exploring how restaurant dishes can be transformed into retail food products and how to scale up a business into the retail market.

Guest speakers include:

Erin Young from the John F. Wood Centre. She will be sharing some tips on what businesses should consider before scaling up their operations

Derek Vella will share how the Guelph Food Innovation Centre helps businesses with product development and labelling requirements.

Plus, we have special guests, Jared Ferrall and Khalil Khamis from Crafty Ramen who will share how they grew their business and transformed their restaurant ramen into their delicious frozen “heat and eat” products sold across the country!

We are excited to announce that Dr. Mark Holmes has been appointed as Director, School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management (HFTM) for a five-year term, effective January 1, 2024.

Mark received his PhD in Environmental Studies (testing the implications of an integrated rural tourism framework for the Niagara wine region) from York University in 2014. His areas of specialization are sustainable tourism, sustainable food service and restaurants and sustainable workplaces.

Mark stepped in as HFTM Interim Director, from January 1st to December 31st, 2023 and has made progress on a number of strategic fronts. We are delighted that Mark has agreed to serve as our School's 9th director, providing critical continuity in this important role.
