Keeping our Harbour Hoppers in-check and ready to hit the road and harbour is no small task. Behind every oil change, tire rotation, engine rebuild, light replacement, safety check, and so much more, are John, Donald, Jim & Jason! This team works diligently behind the scenes to keep our Hoppers hopping and our guests coming back, again and again. We recently paid a surprise visit to these four, congratulated them on their fine work, enjoyed lunch together, and toured the very shop in which they make the ✨magic✨ happen. Thanks gentleman, for all you do!

Meet Abigail and Captain Rachel, Sightseeing Supervisor and Captain of the Harbour Hopper.

Abigail and Rachel both began working for the parent company and sight seeing tour agency, Ambassatours Gray Line, as tour guides in 2016. Abigail led Harbour Hopper tours, and Rachel led tours on Halifax’s iconic Theodore Tugboat before becoming the first female captain to operate the Harbour Hopper.

Both women are passionate about travelling and history. Abigail has travelled the world performing Irish dance competitively and having grown up in Halifax, remembers waving at the Harbour Hopper as a kid. Rachel grew up in Ontario, lived in Germany for a year, and completed both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in German. Over the last six years of working together they have become good friends, as well as some of Halifax’s greatest advocates, helping to share our history, beauty, events, and local businesses with visitors and locals alike.

The Harbour Hopper operates seasonally on both water and land, as a boat and a bus. In peak season, they operate six vessels and run 20 – 30 tours per day. The Harbour Hopper is fully accessible, is becoming Rainbow Registered, and welcomes everyone aboard. From cruise passenger tours and family excursions to bachelorette parties and corporate events, Abigail and Rachel have seen it all! Each day and each tour are slightly different, depending on what is happening Downtown that day. They love the variety and together work hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure on Atlantic Canada’s most popular tour.

Book your tour, purchase gift certificates, or get more information at www.harbourhopper.com or call 902-420-1015. The entire team looks forward to having you on board!

"Every year when we head out east to visit my husband's family, we make a point of taking time to take the Harbour Hopper. We love taking that time to see the sights and really enjoy the tour. It does get chilly in the earlier evening but it’s still so worth it. You really do learn so much of Halifax history. Definitely recommend it. The drivers and tour guides are always amazing!"

Just how rare is it to come across LARC-Vs (the vehicles that make up the Harbour Hopper)? About 600 of them were disposed of during the US withdrawal of Vietnam by sinking them at sea - the remaining approximately 100 can be found around the world, including right here in Halifax. So the short answer, it's very rare!

Some of the notable sites you'll see while on the Harbour Hopper Tour - the HMCS Sackville! Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Sackville is the the last remaining allied corvettes from the Second World War and continues to serve as Canada’s Naval Memorial and a National Historic Site. She is an iconic symbol of the Battle of the Atlantic and the sacrifice of those who gave their lives and of all those who served and continue to serve Canada at sea.

Have you ever ever wanted to know more about the vehicle underneath the Harbour Hopper? Of course you do! Named the LARC-5 (or Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo, 5 ton), these cargo vehicles were developed in the 50s and 60s for the US military to transport cargo from ship to shore. Although quite rare, many do exist around the world and most have been repurposed for a number of undertakings, including working as amphibious tour vehicles (you know, like the ones in Halifax).
