Kwe,

I have been approached by our SMUSA President, Bryn de Chastelain, about an opportunity for an Indigenous student to represent Saint Mary’s University on the National Indigenous Advisory Council. Last year, CASA (Canadian Alliance of Student Associations), has created the National Indigenous Advisory Council to bring together Indigenous peoples from across the country to discuss and focus on Indigenous issues within post-secondary education. CASA has also made improving Indigenous resources a priority this year.

This opportunity would consist of an Indigenous SMU student attending the annual National Indigenous Advisory Council meeting to advocate on behalf of Indigenous Students. These conferences will occur throughout the 2020-2021 School year. Due to the Covid-19 virus, this conference will more than likely occur virtually.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please forward your name, A #, and a short 100-word explanation on why you are interested in representing SMU on the National Indigenous Advisory Council. The candidate selected will be chosen from an Indigenous community election that will take place on July 15th.
Deadline to submit your name for this election is at 11:59pm Monday July 13th. An online election will take place on July 15th to select the successful candidate. These dates may change to accommodate students due to the short notice of this selection.

History is subjective. Kent Monkman discusses how the creation of his shape-shifting, time-travelling, gender-fluid alter ego Miss Chief Eagle Testickle has enabled him to challenge the authority of the settler version of North American art history upheld in museums across the continent.

Kent Monkman is a Cree artist widely known for his provocative interventions into Western European and American art history. He explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss and resilience—the complexities of historic and contemporary Indigenous experiences—across a variety of mediums, including painting, film/video, performance and installation. Miss Chief has been at centre stage for site-specific performances at the Royal Ontario Museum, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Compton Verney and the Denver Art Museum.
