The North End community gathered at Fort Needham Memorial Park in to honour the memory of those lost and affected by the devastating disaster of two ships colliding in the harbour in 1917.

The explosion remains a significant turning point in Halifax’s history, shaping the community and its resilience for generations.

Even though the survivors of the Explosion themselves have passed on, so many memories and stories carry on their legacy over a century later. From the Blind Mechanic to the Flying Sailor, Ashpan Annie to Pilot Mackey, and many more.

To capture the island's beauty without disturbing its delicate ecosystem, Geordie Mott has put together a few key photo tips. First and foremost, maintaining a respectful distance from the wildlife is non-negotiable. With a minimum distance of 20 meters—equivalent to 10 horse lengths—between you and the island's inhabitants, a longer zoom lens becomes your best friend for those detailed close-ups. Opting for a 300mm lens or more can help bridge this gap without the need to switch lenses too frequently, a move that not only helps in avoiding dust but also in keeping your gear load manageable.

Sable Island's unpredictable weather further complicates the photographic experience. The persistent wind and occasional drizzle necessitate a proactive approach to keeping your camera clean and charged. We recommend bringing extra batteries and adopting a rigorous cleaning routine so you can enjoy a fun and a successful shoot. Given the potential for lengthy treks across challenging terrains, such as soft sand under the summer sun, minimizing your load becomes essential. Lightweight mirrorless cameras emerge as the ideal choice, offering the quality you need without the excess weight.
