Workplace Medical Corp. We help companies reduce avoidable employee absences by plugging the leaks in their processes. Pre The First Principles of Absence Management are:
1.

Workplace Medical Corp works as a strategic partner with organizations across Canada, in both the public and private sector to reduce avoidable absences by providing services that support employee absence prevention, response and return to work strategies. Many HR executives and Health & Safety managers recognize that employee absences are an important productivity issue, but effective absence man

agement programs are difficult to design, implement and enforce. Just determining the scope of the problem is a challenging task for most organizations. Early Intervention: Don’t rely on doctor’s notes. The doctor should not be the truent officer for industry.
2. Planned Communication: Get the right information to the right person at the right time.
3. Data Tracking & Measurement: You can’t manage what you can’t measure.
4. Supervisor Involvement: If the supervisor is not part of the solution, they are part of the problem.
5. Time and Attendance: Record keeping does not equal absence management.
6. Policy development and implementation: Poor policy and implementation are by far, the most significant causes of avoidable absences. If you'd like to identify whether there are any leaks in your current absence management program, visit our website to download your free guide.

We are pleased to announce that our first aid training courses in Nova Scotia are fully compliant with the new regulations that will go into effect on August 1st, 2024.

Here are the key updates for Nova Scotia's first aid guidelines:

1. Enhanced First Aid Kits: New minimum standards for first aid kits based on the latest CSA guidelines. Kits are categorized into three types with specific contents.

2. Updated Training Requirements: First aiders must be certified according to the latest CSA standards, and employers must cover the training costs.

3. Record Keeping: Employers must maintain detailed and confidential records of all workplace injuries and first aid treatments for up to five years.

4. Emergency Transportation and First Aid Rooms: Clearer requirements for emergency transportation and mandatory first aid rooms in larger workplaces.

If you have any questions about these or any other Health & Safety (H&S) regulations, we are here to help. Our H&S consultants are familiar with regulations in all provinces.

New regulation is a good trigger for reviewing your H&S program. Our H&S audit reviews all your policies and procedures against regulations and best practices. It identifies compliance gaps and hazards, giving you a clear action plan to achieve full compliance and improve workplace safety.

Organizations are increasingly exploring the effectiveness of remote therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in addressing mental health needs. A trend in the wellness industry is providing virtual resources for easy access, such as virtual therapy. But this raises a pressing question: "Does virtual treatment really work?"

A recent study dives into this topic, highlighting the pros and cons of remote therapy versus traditional in-person sessions and emphasizing the need for flexible, accessible mental health resources.

The study found that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy, eliminates location barriers, provides higher privacy, reduces cost, and offers flexibility in scheduling. However, therapists charge similar prices for their virtual courses, and clients still need to book times that work within the therapist's schedule, not the other way around. This is where internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) can help with accessibility and cost-effectiveness.

Full article: https://bit.ly/3YaJwKc

At Workplace Medical Corp., we understand these challenges and have a solution that meets the evolving demands of today's workforce. Our MediKeeper platform offers iCBT, which is self-led, unlike traditional or online virtual therapy. This means employees can access mental health resources anytime, anywhere, without needing scheduled appointments, resulting in significant cost savings. Our program is designed for flexibility and convenience, ensuring support is always within reach and making the implementation process a breeze for HR leaders.

What sets iCBT on MediKeeper apart from other platforms is its seamless integration with other MediKeeper apps. This integration makes iCBT just one component of a comprehensive wellness program. Our "Total Approach" to wellness includes strategic wellness planning, outsourced Wellness Coordinator support, biometric clinics, and a personalized online wellness portal (Medikeeper) with tools, videos, challenges, cognitive behavioural programs, and micro-learning courses.

By integrating iCBT through Medikeeper into your organization, you can enhance your mental health initiatives with a cost-effective, comprehensive solution that empowers employees to take control of their mental well-being. Let's work together to create a healthier, more resilient workforce.

As summer is in full swing, staying informed about the UV Index is crucial. The Government of Canada has provided helpful tips on how to utilize the UV Index to stay informed about the weather and protect yourself from the sun: https://bit.ly/3VPwhvI

UV Index helps us understand the strength of the sun's rays and the necessary precautions to take.

In Canada, The UV Index ranges from 0 to 11+. 0 means low exposure, and 11+ means extreme exposure to Ultraviolet Rays.

UV levels over level 6 become dangerous, and going outside unprotected can lead to sunburn, eye cataracts, skin aging, and even skin cancer.

The Daily UV Index can be found on weather apps so you can make informed decisions about protecting yourself and your loved ones. Remember to wear hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, and limit your time in the sun when the UV Index is high.

Beat the Heat: Protect Your Workforce from Heat Stress

As summer temperatures soar across Canada, it's vital to safeguard your team from heat-related illnesses. Here is some information that our occupational health nurse presented recently at a lunch and learn on heat stress.

Heat stress symptoms to watch out for:

- Heat Rash: Red bumps in sweaty areas. Keep skin dry and wear loose clothing.

- Heat Cramps: Painful muscle spasms. Rest in a cool area and rehydrate.

Heat Syncope (Fainting): You may experience dizziness and fainting. Move to a cool area and elevate your legs.

- Heat Exhaustion: Dizziness and rapid heart rate. Cool the body and seek medical help if needed.

- Heat Stroke: Confusion and high body temperature. Call 911 immediately.

Some proactive measures you can take to protect yourself from heat stress:

- Encourage breaks in shaded or cool areas.

- Provide hydration options, including electrolyte drinks.

- Adjust work schedules to cooler parts of the day.

Wellness education is the cornerstone of a robust wellness program. Our lunch and learns and wellness seminars can be tailored to your specific needs, equipping your team with the knowledge to stay healthy and safe.

June 1-7 marks National CPR and AED Awareness Week, a crucial time to highlight the importance of knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED. In emergencies, every second counts. Immediate action can significantly increase the chances of survival for someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

Discover more about CPR and AED awareness week and how you can get involved: https://sads.org/get-involved/awareness/national-cpr-and-aed-awareness-week/

Why is this important? Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, and to anyone. When a bystander is trained in CPR and AED use, they can make the difference between life and death. According to the American Heart Association, effective CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

At Workplace Medical, we are dedicated to empowering your employees with the knowledge and confidence needed to act swiftly in emergencies. Our comprehensive training programs focus on immediate actions that can be taken until paramedics arrive. By providing hands-on experience and practical knowledge, we ensure your team is ready to respond effectively and efficiently.

Equip your workforce with life-saving skills. Join us in raising awareness and making a commitment to safety and preparedness.

05/30/2024

Effective CPR, administered immediately after a cardiac arrest, can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. However, statistics reveal that less than 8% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive, primarily due to delayed or ineffective CPR.

Our paramedic instructors noticed that a reason for delayed or ineffective response was that when they arrived on a scene, employees often lacked the confidence to respond even if they had had first aid training.

We designed our first aid training to instill the confidence to respond to emergencies. We did that by utilizing instructors who are emergency response professionals who use real-world examples and can respond to questions that are unique to the client's work environment. We also emphasize the chain of response so students understand their role before the paramedics arrive. It sends the message, “I can do that."

The End of Sick Notes in Ontario: How to Adapt Your Absence Policy

You may have heard that Ontario is planning to scrap the requirement for sick notes for short absences. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-ontario-to-introduce-suite-of-measures-in-effort-to-ease/

But what does this mean for employers who want to manage employee absences and productivity? Don't worry—this change will not hamper your ability to manage this risk. We have some advice for you.

We have always recommended that our clients avoid asking for doctor's notes for brief absences, such as three days or less, as they often slow the return to work process and offer minimal and, in most cases, useless information.

For absences greater than 3 days, we recommend incorporating the following tools into your absence management and support policies:

Identifying absences that reach predefined thresholds for consultation with the employee. Initiate an evidence-based medical review conducted by your company doctor, case managers, and the treating physician to assess the reasons for absence and facilitate a timely and medically informed return to work plan.

Managing medical time loss requires early intervention, medical support, and case management. Contact us today to see how we can help you handle medical issues effectively: https://www.workplacemedical.com/contact-us/

In 2021, Liberty Mutual reported that non-fatal workplace injuries led to over $1 billion per week in direct workers' compensation costs for employers. This emphasizes the critical need for effective measurement and tracking in your Health & Safety (H&S) program.

Our latest article breaks down five essential Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that can form the foundation of a proactive H&S strategy:

1. Injury and Incident Rate – Understand incident patterns and risk areas using the Total Case Incident Rate (TCIR).

2. Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) – Track lost-time injuries to identify trends and refine your return-to-work strategies.

3. Safety Training and Certification Rates (STCR) – Monitor compliance rates to address training gaps and promote a proactive safety culture.

4. Near-Miss Reporting and Investigation – Analyze near misses to mitigate hazards before accidents occur.

5. Corporate Legislative Compliance – Ensure compliance with internal and external audits at all levels.

Understanding how to measure and interpret these KPIs empowers your organization to identify gaps and refine safety strategies. We aim to share practical knowledge on overcoming common challenges in tracking and analyzing these metrics. We emphasize consistent data collection, clear reporting standards, and fostering a culture prioritizing safety and compliance.
