Bobbi Pike Art honours July 1st as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Of all the battles that the Newfoundland Regiment fought during the First World War, none was as devastating or as defining as the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The Regiment's tragic advance at Beaumont Hamel on the morning of July 1, 1916 became an enduring symbol of its valour and of its terrible wartime sacrifices.

The events of that day were forever seared into the cultural memory of the Newfoundland and Labrador people. We will not forget.

Its more than a feeling of coming home. I am sure you understand; that excitement, serenity and peace you feel coming back to a place you love. For me that love has been for more than 40 years and I have been away for 4 months.

I felt myself relaxing into it. My heart lifted and my mind eased.

Then a thought, how long can I stay?

A guest captured it best “a beautiful place, so quiet and still. Trees and water surround us - …for the earth calms us and peace we feel”

At the Country, we have two guests books. A regular guestbook for people to share how their stay was and another that asks for people to share a poem, limerick or song. Perhaps one day we can publish them. Many people do contribute from funny to sweet to more reflective as this place does that -with wide open skies and peace delivered in generous spoonfuls inspiration abounds. Come to the Country breathe in the inspiration and share.

We started in 2017 with one place - The Country but quickly saw the potential of this business and soon we were helping others. Today we launched a new place through our company People, Places & Things. Once again we are managing for other owners. We are delighted to say that we now represent 24 places in 14 communities in Newfoundland.

Beautiful sun, clear blue sky, and barely a gust of wind at this little slice of heaven. 3 short days has been a blessing in disguise, a quiet moment to get away from outside chaos.
