Today is Algonquin Park's Average Fall Colour Peak — Today (September 27) is the average peak fall colour for Sugar Maples in the western portion of Highway 60 in Algonquin Park. However, this year, Sugar Maples are not yet at their peak colour, but it is coming soon. Estimates put the average Sugar Maple in this area slightly more than halfway to peak fall colour. This timing isn't unusual as the peak Sugar Maple fall colour during the past 45+ years has ranged from as early as September 15 (1982) to October 9 (1996), as a result of environmental variables. The exact peak of fall colour for a certain species in a specific geographic area is subject to numerous environmental variables such as daylight length, moisture, temperature, frost, wind, rain, etc., therefore the exact peak of fall colour is difficult to determine in advance. High winds, heavy rain, or even snow can result in fragile leaves being knocked off the trees increasing what is called leaf fall.
