What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a new digital travel authorization introduced by the United Kingdom to enhance border security and streamline entry for travellers from visa-exempt countries, including Canada.
When Does the UK ETA Come into Effect?
Starting January 8, 2025, Canadian travellers will be required to obtain an ETA before visiting the UK. Applications for the ETA opened on November 27, 2024.
Who Needs to Apply?
All Canadian citizens planning to travel to the UK for short stays (up to 6 months) for tourism, business, short-term study, or transit purposes will be required to obtain an ETA. This requirement applies to travellers of all ages, including children and infants.
Application Process
The ETA application is a straightforward online process:
1. Complete the Application: Provide personal information, travel details, and answer security-related questions. Applications can be submitted via the official UK ETA app or online through the UK government website at www.gov.uk/eta
Alternatively, applications can also be submitted via the UK ETA app, available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
Both platforms provide detailed instructions and guidance for completing the application. Make sure to use these official sources to avoid scams or unofficial services.
2. Pay the Application Fee: A fee of £10 is applicable for each applicant.
3. Await Approval: Most applications are processed within three working days. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to your passport.
Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries into the UK during its validity period.
Where to Apply
Travellers can apply for the UK ETA through the official UK government website at www.gov.uk/eta or via the UK ETA app, available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
