โ€œMy name is Kyle Young and I am an Incident Commander with the BC Wildfire Service. I am writing this post rather than sharing a video message because, frankly, it would be too emotional for me. I am someone that ground crews, my kids, and many other people, look up to for guidance through these challenging seasons. I have been doing this job for 16 years. I am a third generation wildland firefighter, following my father and grandfather. I have a long history within this organization and the love I have for this job is what drives me every day, along with the support I receive from my family and co-workers.

This season we have been tested and we have done everything possible to ensure people are safe. I understand there are other opinions out there that might not agree with that sentiment, but please know, from someone who has only been able to spend six days with his family since June 30th, I can attest to the dedication from every single person who is employed on these fires.

2021 is different from previous years. We arenโ€™t getting the resources we usually would from other jurisdictions due to the immense fire danger across Canada and the United States. Then you throw a global pandemic on top of it, which has impacted how we are able to manage fires and the resources we have available to draw from. We show up to do our best but at the end of the day, we are humans and Mother Nature has the power. We need to allow her to do what she needs to do all while keeping everyone safe. Again, I understand not everyone is going to agree with this message and I get it, but please know that I am proud of the effort everyone in the organization, the contractors, partners, and anyone else supporting us are making. The sacrifices to do this job are ultimately driven by passion, empathy, courage, and a huge amount of integrity. My family, along with hundreds of others, have sacrificed a lot in order for us to go out and help the people of British Columbia. We understand the choices we have made in our career. I promise you it is not taken lightly by any of us and we feel proud to be part of this organization.

At the end of each grueling day, I wonder if everyone is okay. Not only on the incident Iโ€™m managing, but those working on other incidents, along with those deeply affected by the devastating wildfires. I wonder if I could have done something different, something better. I wonder what tomorrow will bring, will it rain, will I be able to see my family soon, or will I open social media and be inundated with posts from people who speculate on what we do, or worse, what they think we donโ€™t do. This season will pass and then everyone can ask questions, we will make adjustments, and we will reflect on what we learned this season. Right now, itโ€™s time for us, as a province, to come together and support each other. Help us, help your neighbors, help everyone get through the next six weeks of what has been the most challenging summer. It is also the time to remind yourself that when you post something out of anger, frustration, fear, or heartbreak, there are other families out there feeling all those same things and reading your words that may be hurtful. Please be kind, stay calm, and know that the BC Wildfire Service is fighting for British Columbiaโ€™s safety every single day.โ€

FACTS OF THE DAY ....
Cucumbers... I didn't know this... and to think all these years I've only been making salads with the cucumbers...

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your taps, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the
shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems.

Christy Armstrong wants to share this important message -

I may be ignorant to campfires bc I never knew this.

The RV resort that we have been at the past week has a neighborhood bordering it, they were cutting down trees, sharing this wood with some of us at the resort.

On Thursday they were burning the debris left over and we had a beautiful fire that same night. On Friday my Endsley (10) started with red blotches on her face, I sent pictures to my pediatrician and she thought she was having an allergic reaction to something and prescribed benedryl.

Well we woke up this morning and I about passed out....

We rushed to the urgent care to discover she was having a severe contact dermatitis reaction.

After discussing everything with the doctor and trying to figure out what was different, I happened to mention that we are full timers in our bus and immediately he asked about anyone burning fresh cut wood.

Apparently, burning fresh wood that could have had any type of poison vines on them is more dangerous than saying rolling in it.

Thank God, we caught it and went to urgent care before we had another โ€œfresh woodโ€ fire tonight the possibly of her going into anaphylactic shock. Now I am equipped with an epi pen.

After a dose of steroid we are a little better tonight with the swelling.

I hope this helps educate the ones who didnโ€™t know this.

Even if you are not allergic to poison ivy, burning fresh wood can cause serious lung issues as well.
