The gigantic bronze and gold Shakyamuni Buddha statue (built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck) is impressive on her own.

But she’s also hiding something: over one-hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues, each made of bronze and gilded in gold, housed inside.

Gravitate’s Scott Waldron recently got to embark on the trip of a lifetime – to the remote nation of Bhutan with the help of our partner, MyBhutan!

Together, they helped him craft an itinerary that suited his interests and travel style.

“They took the time at the beginning of the planning stages to get to know me and my preferences,” Scott says. “They asked me my fitness level. And arranged for my driver and guide, which you have to have when travelling to Bhutan.”

And on the top of his to-do list? The surreal Paro Taktsang or Tiger’s Nest.

The 17th-century structure is perched 3,000 metres above sea-level, overlooking the Pavro Valley. Its remoteness and its beauty are symbolic of the nation as a whole: a challenge to get to but totally worth it!
