Travel Advisories – Air Canada Labour Negotiations
September 9, 2024
Air Canada is in negotiations with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Currently, operations are not affected, and flights are operating as scheduled.
At Air Canada Vacations, we understand that certainty about travel plans is important. For this reason, we have introduced a Goodwill Policy to offer our shared customers the reassurance and flexibility to change their booking. Customers who have purchased a travel package that includes an Air Canada flight prior to September 9, 2024, for travel dates between September 15 and September 23, 2024, can modify their booking without incurring change fees and rebook on alternate date between September 9 and September 14, 2024, or September 24, 2024, onwards. Refunds will not be permitted.
Customers will have the option to:
• Change their travel date and benefit from a one-time $50 instant credit per passenger. Price is subject to change.
• Opt for a Future Travel Credit for the full amount, valid for 1 year (instant credit not applicable).
• Customers at destination during the period of September 15 to September 23, 2024 may also request a return travel date change. Change fees will be waived but the customer will have to pay the price difference, if any. Additional charges also apply for extended hotel stays.
Please see below for Frequently Asked Questions about the goodwill policy.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Does a “strike mandate” mean there will be a strike?
A: A strike vote is a normal part of the negotiating process and a strike or lock-out cannot take place before a 21-day cooling off period that began on August 27, 2024. Flight delays and cancellations resulting from labour disruptions, should they occur, are unlikely to occur before mid-September. Find out more about the bargaining process.
Q: What does this mean for our customers?
A: We understand that our shared customers want certainty around their travel plans and so we have introduced a Goodwill Policy to give them flexibility to determine what works best for them.
All customers who have purchased packages that include an Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge flight prior to August 27, 2024 for travel from September 15 to 23, 2024, can change any travel already purchased without incurring change fees and rebook on alternate dates between September 8 to September 14 or September 24, 2024 onwards.
It is important to remember that Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz or PAL Airlines are not operated by Air Canada pilots and therefore will not be impacted by the end of the cooling-off period.
Q: What options do customers have under the Goodwill Policy?
A: Changes can be made by calling the Air Canada Vacations call center (although wait times may be longer). Refunds will not be permitted. The policy allows customers holding bookings on flight-inclusive packages with travel between September 15 to 23, 2024, to:
1. Change their travel date only and benefit from a one-time $50 instant credit per passenger. Price is subject to change. All other elements of the package, including choice of hotel, remain the same unless the original hotel is no longer available for the new date.
or
2. Opt for a Future Travel Credit for the full amount, valid for 1 year (instant credit not applicable).
or
3. Customers at destination during the period of September 15 to September 23, 2024 may also request a return travel date change. Change fees will be waived but the customer will have to pay the price difference, if any. Additional charges also apply for extended hotel stays.
The policy applies to packages which include Air Canada operated flights, including Air
Canada mainline, Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz or PAL Airlines, and Air Canada Vacations (an additional fee may apply for hotels). It is important to remember that Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz or PAL Airlines are not operated by Air Canada pilots and therefore will not be impacted by the end of the cooling off period.
Q: Will customers with special requests be impacted?
A: Additionally, to give customers with special requests visibility, certain special services will be temporarily unavailable. These include services such as the Unaccompanied Minor Program, special request baggage services for items such as bicycles and hunting equipment, and the Meet and Assist Program in Japan. We will continue to offer all additional services related to accessibility. More details for Air Canada Vacations customers are available 1-866-529-2079.
Q: What should customers who booked through a travel agent do?
A: To make changes to their booking, customers should contact their travel agent directly.
Q: What if a booking has CareFlex travel protection attached? Will it be redeemed when the booking is modified?
A: No, the CareFlex travel protection attached to the customer’s booking will carry over to the new booking. Taking advantage of the Goodwill Policy does not impact CareFlex travel protection already on file.
Q: Are cruise bookings eligible for the Goodwill Policy?
A: Yes, as long as there is a flight component to the package, cruise bookings are eligible for modifications as outlined in the policy above.
Q: Can I rebook my flight on another airline?
A: Our Goodwill Policy only allows for rebooking on other flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, and Air Canada Express (flights operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines).
Q: What if a customer’s departure occurs before the Goodwill Policy’s travel window, but their return occurs during the travel window? Is their booking eligible?
A: Yes, any travel date associated with the customer’s travel (either departure or return) that occurs between September 15, 2024, and September 23, 2024, is eligible for modification under the Goodwill Policy.
