- B.C.’s Invasive Mussel Defence Program (IMDP) has released its 2023 inspection stats.
‼️ Once again, the OKANAGAN is the #1 DESTINATION FOR INVASIVE MUSSEL-INFESTED WATERCRAFT ‼️
Remember, it only takes one mussel-infested watercraft to ruin our waters! 🚤🛶🏄
Here are this year’s inspection numbers:
⚠️ 20,900 inspections conducted (most of these from April 1 – Oct. 31, however additional inspections were conducted into December, following the detection of quagga mussels in Idaho)
⚠️ 155 watercraft were identified as high risk.
⚠️ 79 decontaminations were conducted, and 36 were issued quarantine periods to meet the 30-day required drying time to ensure the mussels were dead.
⚠️ 14 were confirmed to have invasive mussels. These came from Ontario (10), Manitoba (1), Michigan (1), Nevada (1) and South Carolina (1). They were destined for Thompson-Okanagan (😎, Lower Mainland (4), Kootenay–Boundary (1) and Northeast (1) regions.
👏 Kudos to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and the IMDP team for all your work this past year to help keep B.C. waters invasive mussel-free! The Okanagan Basin Water Board-OkWaterWise remains committed to working with partners to protect B.C. waters from aquatic invasives. 💪
🚨 BE AWARE: If you are travelling outside of B.C. and coming back with ANY WATER RECREATION EQUIPMENT (boat, kayak, paddleboard, fishing gear), you MUST BE INSPECTED before entering the province. 🚨
