EUROPEAN VACATION TIPS
Planning the ultimate European vacation? Here are five things to keep in mind as you get ready for your trip.
First - check your airport codes. Many major cities in Europe - including London, Paris, and Rome - are served by multiple airports. You don’t want to plan a connection, only to find out your next flight is at an airport more than an hour away.
Even if there’s a great deal on airfare, consider how much the transfer will cost and the time you’ll need to get between the two facilities. You may find logistically it’s not plausible.
Second, whether you’re travelling during peak or shoulder season, try to organize your most important activities ahead of time. Reserve admission to popular museums and other attractions beforehand, if you can. Even if there is an extra fee, if it’s an experience that is important to you, it’s worth the investment for your peace of mind.
Third, consider how you’ll get around. Most European cities boast excellent transit systems. Take a look at the options for multi-day or visitor passes that give you the most bang for your buck, rather than relying on taxis, uber, or a car rental.
If you are travelling between cities, train travel is likely the most efficient and affordable method, depending how far you’re going. Purchase your pass in advance and be sure to book a seat. Not every train fare comes with one and you don’t want to be left standing.
Fourth, avoid falling victim to a pickpocket and pay attention while you’re in public spaces. Be cautious about when and where you pull out your smartphone or camera. Don’t carry your passport with you, keep cash and some coins in a few different spots, and wear a money belt. Also leave jewellery behind and if you wear prescription sunglasses or glasses, have a back-up pair at your hotel or vacation rental.
Finally, think carefully about what you’ll pack to wear on your body and your feet. Bring comfortable, climate appropriate clothing, but be mindful where you’ll be going. Many historical religious sites and cathedrals require visitors to cover their knees and shoulders. Be respectful of the dress codes and customs; bring modest, light layers that can be easily packed around.
And be realistic about footwear. Pick something you are comfortable walking in. This isn’t the time to break-in a new pair of sandals or heels, especially if you’ll be on your feet for much of the day.
One last bonus reminder – bring an adapter so your devices can stay charged up! There are products on the market that can serve as charging banks and multi-adapters.

Common Travel Mistakes
If you don’t travel often, there might be some mistakes you are making that can not only cost you time, but money as well. Here are some of the most common mistakes travelers make. And the first is not checking in online.
Unless you have some kind of problem that can’t be resolved ahead of time, there should be no reason for not checking in online. And if you don’t have any luggage to check, you can skip the counter and head straight to the security line.
Not taking advantage of technology to speed through airport – you can use YVR Express to book a security spot up to 72 hours prior to departure; you can use the Mobile Passport Control App when going thru US customs & the ArriveCAN when arriving back into Canada for advanced declaration.
Another mistake is not downloading the airline and airport app if they are available. Also loading up your entertainment by downloading music, shows or movies.
Another mistake is not marking your luggage inside & out. Most of us have been there standing at the luggage carousal with an endless stream of suitcases that look more or less the same. Save yourself the hassle of looking at each bag as is it goes by marking yours with a brightly colored luggage tag or lock.
And if you have a long layover, don’t forget to check to see if there is a pay per use lounge available – you don’t need a business class ticket to get in . You’ll pay anywhere $20 - 60 and get Wi-Fi, food, drinks, including alcohol, and sometimes even showers. That can be well worth it if you are stuck for a long period of time.
This may be simple but another mistake some travelers make is not being nice. Patience and a smile goes a long way when it comes to interacting with the gate attendants, flight attendants, TSA agents, and even your fellow travelers.
I’ve seen seats changed and special favors accommodated simply because someone asked nicely. And even if you don’t end up getting what you want, at least you went about it the best way possible.
Lastly, not joining an airlines rewards program when booking a flight, hotel or car rental. Get the points. Then use points.com which has over 100+ points programs to move them into whichever program you use the most.

While we all hope our international trips go smoothly, sometimes life has other plans. In those instances, it's heartening to know that Canada's consular officers are there to help, providing expertise at 260 points of service around the world.
Typically, most citizens access consular services abroad to replace lost passports, notarize documents, or vote in a Canadian election.
However, our embassies and consulates offer more complex assistance and guidance, to help you navigate more challenging circumstances.
That can include support during medical emergencies, aiding in locating a missing relative or friend, or understanding local laws.
While officers can offer a list of local doctors and hospitals, the consulate cannot provide medical services or cover healthcare expenses. If you are travelling, it's important to secure your own travel insurance policy before you depart that covers medical.
If you run into trouble with the law or are arrested, consular officers can provide general information about the local legal and prison systems, and offer a list of lawyers. But, they cannot help you by posting bail, offering legal advice, or paying legal fees. Nor can they get Canadians out of foreign prison.
It's important to remember, consular services are a key resource and they will do what they can within the limits of local laws and regulations. It's up to travellers to be as prepared as possible and manage risks on their trips.
If you are travelling internationally, take a moment to review the Travel Advice and Advisories for your destination. These are regularly updated by Global Affairs Canada, who are constantly monitoring situations around the world.
Also, be sure to sign-up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service. It's free - and it makes it easy for consular officers to reach you in the event of an emergency and provide assistance.
