Our final stop on our tour brings us to Malaga. This Andalusian port city is one of the oldest in the world, rich in traditional and cultural heritage. Besides its historical interests which include a Roman amphitheater, a baroque cathedral and a moorish castle, Malaga is the birthplace of Picasso. This vibrant city filled with museums, restaurants, tapas bars, market and shops of all sizes seems to come alive in the evening with families out for walks and enjoying meals together. It really is quite magical! We too enjoyed our last night together at a wonderful dinner with the most entertaining waiters!
Time to say adios to Spain…. Till next time Happy travels!

Another white town we visited was Ronda, a mountaintop city in Spain’s Malaga province that’s set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge separates the 15th C new town from the moorish rule old town and is connected by the most photographed bridge La Puenta Nueva. Debbie & I made the trek down to the lookout to get the most coveted photo. Priceless!!

On route to our final stop Malaga we stopped a small white hillside town called Frigiliana. Beautiful narrow whitewashed streets with shops and restaurants galore! Just the right place for a bus load of ladies to stretch our legs and partake in some retail therapy!

We next travelled on to Granada situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
It’s home to the Alhambra, the famous Moorish palace and fortress that sits in the center of the city. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world.
The beautiful neighborhood of the Albaicín with its narrow streets and patios overlooks the Alhambra providing picturesque views. A tapas tour introduced us to the local tapas with a selection of tapas and local wines….. so yummy!

Our next stop is Cádiz, an ancient port city in the Andalucia region of southwestern Spain, situated on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea. The older part of Cádiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town and is the oldest city in Western Europe. Its narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas with historic monuments , Roman ruins and its many watch towers made this a wonderful city to explore.

On route to Cádiz we stopped in Jerez home ofThe Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, a famed riding school with horse shows and a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry production in the so-called Sherry Triangle lying to the west. Speaking of Sherry….. we visited family owned winery which produced several varieties of Sherry and a highlight was having a taste right from the barrel!

Our tour started in Seville the capital and largest city in Andalucia. Our walking tour with Robert gave us a women’s historical perspective of this city. Its beautiful parks, monuments and plaza d’ España were some of the places we visited. Seville’s centrally located cathedral is one of the largest churches in the world as well as the largest Gothic church.
We explored the old town with its maze of tiny streets, participated in a Flamenco dance class as well as cooking class specializing in paella, tapas and sangria! Too yummy!!

Our last two stops included two of the most beautiful coastal towns in this part of Italy. Gallipoli, which is actually on the Ionian Sea and the town of Monopoli. The old town of Gallipoli is on a small island connected by a stone bridge. We enjoyed a walking tour and a sea side lunch. Monopoli was the last stop on this tour. A wonderful old town with lots of places to get lost, enjoy good food and with endless views of the sea. We finished off our last night with a group dinner where we shared stories of our two weeks together.
This part of Italy is not to be missed as it is a true gem ! Till next time…. Ciao!

Our travels next took us through the hill top towns of Locorotondo and Ostuni, known as the “white city”, to our destination of Lecce, known as “the Florence of the south”. Our guide Daniela pointed out some of the historical highlights as we walked through these towns and admired the architecture. We enjoyed the beautiful white washed buildings as they wound their way around the each hillside As we drove through the Itria valley known for its production of wine & olive oil we did stop to sample 🍷. A farmhouse lunch rounded out our day.

From Matera we travelled back to the coastal town of Polignano Al Mare. Beautiful views of the water and the rugged coast. As we walked through the old town on the stone lined streets gelato was a welcomed treat! A visit to the Grotto di Castellana a series of caves 400 ft under the surface was most interesting. Our final stop and really the most magical is the town of Alberobello. It’s known for its trulli, whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs where we spent the night. A cooking class with our cook Maria in her own trullo was the highlight!

From Bari we traveled north to the seaside town of Trani. Known for its 13th century Castello and Cathedral built of the creamy limestone. Blue skies followed us as we toured this lovely town and then on to Castel del Monte. This 13thC castle is octagonal in shape with octagonal turrets at each corner. Most interesting!
On this leg of the journey we saved the best for last.. Matera! What can I say?The third oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the world, dating back to prehistoric times. For some information check out https://www.understandingitaly.com/matera.html
I’ll let the pictures do the talking as we learned the history with our guide Stella, incredible views and a happy hour nestled in the courtyard of our very own stone house! Did I mention Gelato??

We have arrived in Bari and I had forgotten how beautiful this part of Italy is. Bordering on the Adriatic with its cream colored buildings, deep blue waters and skies with puffy white clouds! A tour through the old town with our guide Georgio taught us about the lifestyle of this region. From the fishermen playing cards to the women making pasta, and a sampling of fresh focaccia straight from the oven! Oh and did I mention Gelato?? Our motto is “a gelato a day “ and that won’t be hard to achieve!

The following days included a roof top birthday celebration and a day trip to Nice. We stopped to have lunch in the beautiful Flower market right next to the Old town. The Fragonard perfume factory was next on our agenda. Such an interesting tour on the making of perfume with the ladies being tested on the accuracy of their sense of smell.
A trip high into the mountains behind Nice took us to some medieval villages, Gourdon and Tourette’s sur Loup. Picturesque vignettes at every corner!

We have finally made our way to the Mediterranean! The beautiful waters of the French Riviera! This port town has the largest harbour in Europe and a marina for super yachts known as the “Billionaires Quay”. The old town is made up of narrow cobbled streets, a covered market, small shops ,cafes & bistros. The Picasso museum also makes it home here as well as many artisans. Our guide Sarah helps us discover our home for 4 nights as we explore the surrounding area.

We traveled to the small town of St Quentin known for its many pottery studios. From abstract ceramic creations to colourful tiled roofs we saw a varied selection of potters creations. Next was the town of Uzès, a city steeped in history. It was originally a fortified town and the site of an ancient settlement dating from the 2nd century BCE. Lunch in the square finished off our visit to this historical area. Our next stop was Pont du Gard an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD to carry water over 50 km to the town of Nîmes. A truly remarkable engineering feat it is the tallest of all Roman aqueduct bridges, as well as one of the best preserved.

Our next trip into the countryside took us to the market town of Saint Remy and the Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital where Vincent van Gogh stayed for a whole year, until May 1890. It was here he experienced the most productive period in his short life as an artist, during which he produced almost 150 paintings and numerous drawings, including ‘The Starry Night’, ‘The Almond Tree Branch in Bloom’ and ‘The Iris’. Our guide Laurence once again informed us on Vincent Van Gogh’s life and struggles. On to market day in St Remy filling the streets with stalls of all shapes and sizes. Cheeses , sausages and goods of all sorts are found together with clothing, leather goods , baskets & linens.
We next traveled to Les Baux de Provence considered “one if the most beautiful villages in France” Set atop a rocky spur, it displays panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. We ended our day with a most delicious tasting of regional olive oils……. Yummy!

Our next adventure took us two of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence, Gordes and Roussillion.
Gordes is perched high on a cliff, with incredible views looking down on the beautiful Luberon valley and is completely made of stone.
Roussillion is situated in the heart one of the biggest Ocre deposits and is famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries.
The red, yellow and brown shades of the earth form a striking contrast with the surrounding green pinetrees.
What better way to end our day than with a wine tasting at Domaine de La Citadelle. Needless to say we all fell asleep in the bus ride home!
