If you seek the cultural heartbeat of Aotearoa New Zealand, take a stroll through New Zealand’s early history at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands.​

Explore the beauty of the peaceful park on a guided tour, listening to the stories of the local people and events, learning about the significance of this place where on the 6 February 1840 Aotearoa’s founding document was signed. This is known as the Treaty of Waitangi or Te Tiriti o Waitangi in te reo Māori.​

As part of this journey of discovery, explore the exhibitions within the two museums and touch the intricate carvings of Ngātokimatawhaorua, the giant waka taua (war canoe). Not to be missed is the kapa haka cultural performance in front of the meeting house – songs, poi and a traditional haka (war dance) are all part of this pōwhiri (welcome).​

Expert tip: When entering the meeting house as part of the kapa haka cultural performance, visitors will be required to take off their shoes – it's worth choosing footwear that is easy to slip off.

However, its official name is "okapi", an endemic species living in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Central Africa.
