Thomas H. Raddall writes (before 1949): The "Elmwood Hotel" originally a very large house built by Simeon Perkins daughter, Abigail and her husband Joshua Newton, Customs Officer. The house was purchased for the Canadian Navy about 1942, during World War II and used as living quarters and offices for Naval personnel whose ships were undergoing refit at the plant of Thompson Machinery Co. Ltd. After the war ended (about 1949) the Elmwood was torn down and its site is now a lawn in front of the artillery training quarters.

Note: And today this property is the site of the Queens County Museum and the "Elmwood Hotel" would have sat in what is today the Museum's lower parking lot. The Armories buildings referred to by Raddall were torn down to make way in 1980 for the building of the Queens County Museum.
