Attention Sunshine Coast Trail visitors! BC Parks is collaborating with Rec Sites and Trails BC to create a Visitor Use Management Strategy for the Sunshine Coast Trail, and we want to hear from you about what you love about this trail and what needs improvement.

The world-renowned trail, located in the Powell River area, stretches over 180 kilometres and includes majestic coastal shorelines, old growth forests, lakes, and panoramic mountaintops. It is the longest hut-to-hut hiking trail in Canada, with 15 first-come, first-served huts along the trail, tenting options, and several access points for those wishing to visit smaller sections of the trail.

The Sunshine Coast Trail has been experiencing growing visitor use in recent years, and your feedback is important to us as we develop strategies to ensure sustainable usage of this beautiful trail.

Mark your calendars for this super offering from the Marine Education & Research Society!

Dr. Marianne Nyegaard will be delivering a FREE webinar on Mola/ Sunfish. This Family-friendly event will be held June 7th @ 1:30pm PDT. Find more details and register through the link in the post below.

| | | | |

[Recording of the Marvellous Mola webinar is now available for you here https://youtu.be/bLKdDKqJ1Jc ]

FREE Ocean Day webinar about Mola / Sunfish with world-renowned scientist.
Because, HOLY MOLA they live HERE off the coast of BC!

There are TWO species found in BC waters. The Mola in this photo is a Mola mola (Ocean Sunfish). The other Mola species found in these waters is the Mola tecta (Hoodwinker Sunfish).

Join us on June 7th, 2024 at 1:30 pm PDT to learn about these astounding species as ambassadors of the biodiversity in our waters and how much more there is to discover, even about giant fish that can be over 3 metres long.
We are so lucky that Dr. Marianne Nyegaard herself will provide this webinar. No one knows more about the Mola in BC waters than she does. It’s her work that led to a new species being recognized AND that it’s known that this species is off our coast.

Join us to marvel at Mola! Register here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/ce53ca1d-fc78-482a-a92c-3bfc52ecdb61

The content will be appropriate for all ages but the educational approach will be aimed at elementary school students and they will be the priority for discussion and answering questions. The webinar will be ~30 minutes followed by ~15 minutes for questions.

Photo is by Tashi Townley - Mola mola in Kyuoquot Sound with Megan Komori-Kennedy and Violet Komori.

Known locally as the Ragged Islands, this archipelago just north of Lund is a destination for both our day and multiday tours. Made up of 18 islands and islets, there are a few picnic spots and two main camping areas with plenty of tent platforms overlooking the Salish Sea, making it a great spot for kayak campers traveling between Lund and Desolation Sound.
This area is vulnerable to the impacts of recreational users of the islands with its rocky dry terrain and guests in this marine park should practice "Leave No Trace" (as always in any location in the outdoors!) and be respectful of culturally significant areas as they enjoy the beauty and shelter the islands provide.

Oh, the places we go...CORTES ISLAND!

Cortes is a boaters paradise, both motorized and human powered, with its many bays, fascinating reefs and tidal lagoons.
It is approximately 25 km long and 13 km wide, and the southern half lies in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island, making that part of the island much drier than the rest. It's also where you'll find most of the residents living.
There is much beauty to take in and many stories to share at places such as Mansons Landing, Gorge Harbour, Whaletown and Von Donop.
At Squirrel Cove, one can find the village and governance centre of the Klahoose Nation, whose people have lived and stewarded the lands in this area since time immemorial.

Terracentric likes to visit the island via circumnavigation on a full day boat tour, or while paddling on multi-day sea kayak tours. Visiting Cortes is one our guides favourite trips!

Oh, the places we go... MITLENATCH ISLAND!

Mitlenatch, a name from the ʔayʔaǰuθəm (Tla'amin) language, meaning “calm waters all around” is offered referred to as the Galapagos of the Strait.
It is a small rocky island that resides in Vancouver Island's "rain shadow" and has uniquely semi-arid conditions that result in about half the annual rain fall as nearby Campbell River. Because of these conditions, there is actually a native species of coastal cactus that bloom in the last half of June here. Wildflower meadows are best seen in May or sometimes even earlier.
There are also plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife as well, as Mitlenatch Island Nature Park is home to the largest seabird colony in the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia).
If you have't been, it really ought to be on your local bucket list!

Oh the places we go.....SARAH POINT!

The northernmost point of the Sunshine Coast Trail, Canada's longest hut to hut hiking trail begins at Sarah Point at the tip of the Malaspina Peninsula. With our Zodiac, we can get into close in to shore, and help get you & your gear safely ashore to begin your hike. Perfect for small groups of 2 or 3 persons!
The traditional indigenous name of the point is saysimaʔaq, meaning wind blowing in every direction, which as always is a much more descriptive and useful name than 'Sarah' a name given by Captain George Vancouver in honour of one of his sisters!
BC Parks has put in some tent platforms great for hikers or paddlers (coming in at the right tide) and just outside the park boundary, is the Sarah Point hut, erected by the volunteers of qPAWS who are the amazing stewards of the trail.

Oh the places we go...WADDINGTON CHANNEL!

Located between East and West Redonda Islands, this channel includes some well known locations such as Roscoe Bay (Black Lake), Pendrell Sound and Walsh Cove Marine Park, a sheltered group of islets ideal for anchoring, swimming and kayaking. Historically significant and visually stunning, one can see indigenous pictographs, remnants of recent homestead settlements and beautiful landscapes of stunning green trees, tall granite cliffs and the top of East Redonda, Mt. Addenbroke (1590 m or 5216 feet) rising up dramatically from the sea.
We often travel Waddington Channel as part of our route on our full-day Wild Coast boat tours or on longer multiday kayaking trips.

Oh, the places we go...TOBA INLET

Surrounded by impressive coast mountains and fed by glacial run off which turns the water a lovely turquoise, Toba Inlet is a shining example of the beauty found in isolation. At only 35 km long, is it one of the smaller inlets on the coast and lies within the traditional lands of the Klahoose Nation, who have lived there since time immemorial calling it Yekwamen. The first colonial name, Canal de la Tabla, was given by Spanish explorers in 1792 because of a significant archeological find.

Our longer 8 hour Zodiac boat tour visits this inlet and going in the spring or early summer is the best time to view the beautiful waterfalls.

Oh, the places we go...HOMFRAY CHANNEL

Homfray Channel's Coast Salish name is Thee chum mi yich, meaning "further back inside". The channel is within the territory of the Klahoose First Nation and is the way we often travel when we are heading towards Toba Inlet on our zodiac boat tours or multiday kayak trips.

Located between East Redonda Island and the mainland, it has steep granite cliffs coloured by lichens, water and the greens of the intertidal zone, which adds to the already dramatic landscape.

Oh, the places we go...REFUGE COVE!

Refuge Cove was established in 1913, and the community grew quickly, with enough children to merit building a school (2014) and the first version of the popular store built in 1918! Earning the title of "Social Centre of the Sound" in the 1920s, settlers came from far and wide for the Saturday night dances held in the hall behind the general store. By 1931, the population had reached 200.
These days, while there are only a dozen year-round residents, it still draws flocks of boaters looking to refuel at the gas dock, or provision at the well stocked store. A seasonal restaurant & gallery round out the offerings!
Refuge Cove is a stop on our Desolation Sound boat tours!
