Limestone the primary material used in the construction of these blockhouses, which were built in the 19th century. They were strategically located along the Rideau Canal waterway in Ontario, Canada, to provide protection and defense against potential threats.

The Kingston Mills blockhouse is located at the outlet of the Cataraqui River and is the oldest of the four. It was built in 1831 and played a significant role in the defense of the canal system.

The Newboro blockhouse, built in 1832, guarded the Rideau Lake entrance to the canal. It was strategically positioned to protect the canal from any potential attacks from the south.
