Thirty centuries and still here!

The map depicted above displays traditional Mi’kmaq place names of streams brooks and rivers here in eastern New Brunswick Canada. Rivers are such an important part of our history! Helps to shape who you are as a people. I know this river has helped to shape who I am today. I watched early on as my dad made a modest income from the river during guiding and also watched him catch fish and provide our small family’s food from the river.

I grew up in a small place called Red Bank, along a beautiful river known as the Miramichi, located in New Brunswick, Canada. The place has since changed names to Metepenagiag and that is how it is known today. “The Village of Thirty Centuries” as known by its members.

Growing up during school I had the chance to learn about Canadian history, and part of that learning included first nation history from the colonial point of view. The cultures and history of other places around the world were taught and I felt during this time there was a gap missing from our side of the story here in Canada. I want to help fill that gap.

People need to experience for themselves what the Mi’kmaq people have to offer. I believe that we can develop a new story for ourselves and our communities. Pride and self reliance result from keeping our culture alive while earning a good healthy living from teaching others as to who we were to where we are today. I truly believe that we can have a win win scenario. Its about building relationships with good people who want to work with you and your team.
