What most people don't know about the Polynesian islands is that you can have a immersive experience by staying at a local pension (pronounced pone-see-owns)

A pension is a local guesthouse, bungalow or Villa. They usually tend to be secluded and can have up to 15 rooms in a villa.

We think one of the best reasons to stay at a pension is that the owners of these properties love to share insider hidden gems of the location.. can you say Private pearl diving lessons!!🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

We're continuing our series on the lessor known French Polynesian Islands. Today we're sharing images from Tahaa (pronounced Tah-ah-ah) .

This small island along with it's much larger sister island Raiatea, are only a 30-40 minute boat ride from Bora Bora but your experience will be very different than that main island.

With roughly 1500 inhabitants you wont find major tourist attractions , what you will find is a few small villages tucked into the bay and local residents ready to welcome you to their slice of paradise. While there you can set up a private lunch on an atoll and after lunch go swimming in the turquoise waters , just remember to relax and enjoy the view for at least an hour

There only a hand full of unspoiled locations left in the world, one of them is Raivavae, one in a group of seven French Polynesian islands south of Tahiti.

Raivavae (pronounced ray-ee-va-vey) is the closest thing to untouched paradise you will find, there are no touristy shops no huge hotels just laid back calm. Most people that have stayed on this island say it's like taking a time warp and stepping back into the way Bora Bora and the other more populated island were about 70 years ago.

Getting around this paradise takes about 2 hours by bike and circles the 6-mile-long, 1-mile-wide island.

Want to find out which Polynesian island should be on your must visit? Then you don't want to miss this post.

If connecting with the true culture of the islands is at the heart of your adventure then Nuku Hiva is the place to visit. This group of far northern Marquesas Islands are considered the cultural crafts people of the Pacific. They create beautiful art, carvings and tattoos that tell stories of these islands and peoples.

Then there's Rurutu, where hundreds of whales gather to mate and give birth in the islands clear waters. Every year between July and October, this whale-spotting spot is Epik.

Or how about the calm quite lush island of Tubuai. Inside a blue lagoon, with coffee and orange trees growing along the mountainsides, it's off the beaten path and perfect for hiking.

📍 Tikehau, Fakarava and Raiatea

Those names are familiar to some, but many first time visitors to the French Polynesian Islands may never have heard of these amazing atolls and islands.

When putting together your itinerary for your visit why not check out Tikehau, known for it's pink/coral sand beaches and Manta Ray 'cleaning' station an area in the ocean where hundreds of smaller fish attach themselves to mantas and enjoy a free lunch and a ride.
You could also get some bird watching in on Bird island.

Then there's Fakarava , the second-largest atoll in the archipelago it's a favorite for scuba divers. The famous south pass with its wall of reef shark is known as one of the best places in the world to see grey reef shark up close.

Lastly why not add Raiatea to the must visit list. Tahiti Tourisme wrote that it's "recognized as the most sacred island in the region, with the green-carpeted mountains rising to the cloud-capped peak of the celebrated Mt. Temehani". If you're up for a challenge you could hike the 17Km up the top of mountain and take in the incredible views of the islands .

One of the best things about traveling to exotic locations like the French Polynesian Islands is the shopping for locally made items.🛍

You definitely won't be disappointed when it comes to souvenirs or gifts because on every island there are so many beautiful handcrafted items for sale.

Our favorite has to be the colorful Pareos, they're the perfect gift and so easy to pack..(we get them in every color)

There's also handmade baskets and purses woven out of Palm leaves or Pandanus leaves. Did you know that the roofs of most overwater bungalows are made using the Pandanus leaves.

-Visit a pearl farm or local pearl market and learn how pearls are cultivated and harvested.-📿

-Enjoy a private catered lunch of local fare on one of the thousands of islets or atolls aka Motus scattered around this part of the pacific🍱

-Go quad biking or 4 wheeling . You can do this at a number of spots on the islands, including Moorea and Bora Bora.🥽🏊‍♂️
