This fine silver coin pays tribute to the railways of Canada and their contributions to the war effort between 1914 and 1918. As the steel and timber arteries of a young nation, Canada’s railways played a vital role on the home front during the First World War by transporting goods and supplies that were vital to the wartime economy and Canada’s allies overseas. And as Canadians heeded the call of duty sent out on August 6, 1914, so too did the railways; they would be used extensively to transport thousands of enlisted Canadians on their journey to Europe’s battlefields, and would bring returning soldiers home again in 1918.

The Carolinian forest zone is located in the southernmost region of Ontario, between Windsor and Toronto, extending east along the shore of Lake Ontario to Bellville, and north to Goderich. Every spring, it bursts into bloom with large tulip-like flowers that grow on the tulip-tree (Liriodendron tulipifera); a stunning, fast-growing tree that grows up to 35 metres tall.

The year 2015 marks the 350th anniversary of the introduction of the Canadian Horse. Robust, resilient, and good natured, the petit cheval de fer—the “little iron horse,” as it became known in its native Quebec—has survived near extinction to emerge as one of Canada’s official national symbols. The Royal Canadian Mint proudly celebrates the anniversary of its introduction with a unique half-kilogram coin of 99.99% pure silver.

Young Burrowing Owls are particularly endearing for their extra-long legs that stick out from beneath their bodies like stilts. It’s an adaptation for living on the grasslands; with few trees to perch on, Burrowing Owls have evolved to sprint along the ground to capture prey. And without trees for nesting, Burrowing Owls have adapted by living underground in abandoned badger, gopher or prairie dog homes. The chicks stay in the den for the first two weeks, but will soon emerge to explore their world and develop their hunting skills.

Spring is one of Canada’s most exciting seasons simply for its explosion of fresh new life. The land seems to change by the hour as new buds and leaves burst forth to soak up the sun. The air is fresh and full of life. Yet, one of spring’s most spectacular sights is a towering maple tree with its canopy of fresh, vivid leaves; and one of the best places to enjoy its beauty is from the trunk, looking up.

Autumn is one of Canada’s most beautiful seasons that transform the landscape into a magnificent panorama of colour. It’s a spectacle of yellow, orange and gold that lures people into the forests to experience nature’s artistry firsthand, and one of the best ways to view the canvas is to stand among the trees, looking up.

The maple leaf is a powerful national symbol—one with a distinct and elegant shape that captures much of Canada’s nature—winters that have influenced the way the world views this land and its people; breathtaking autumn colours that have captured the hearts of artists for centuries—but most of all, it symbolizes a land of opportunity to build a new life and enjoy the prosperity of free enterprise.
