Day 5 - August 31, 2024 - Into the Northwest Passage

Disko Island on the west coast of Greenland is the second-largest landmass in Greenland. We soaked up the early morning sunshine and took in the beauty of the freshly snow-dusted mountains of the area. Hiking, beachcombing, wildlife searching, and, of course, quiet time to take in the beauty and magnitude of our last stop in Greenland were all on the menu today. We finished the day with a Disko dance party, boogieing the night away, waving goodbye to Greenland, and saying hello to Arctic Canada.

Day 4 - August 30, 2024 - Into the Northwest Passage

Ilulissat is a community of over 4,000 Greenlanders and is where you can see the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ilulissat Icefjord, the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq where Greenland’s ice cap meets the sea. It is the most productive icefjord in the world outside of Antarctica, calving over 35 km3 of ice each year.

Guests explored the town and Ilulissat Icefjord by land and sea, with some guests enjoying a boat tour among the towering glaciers and others taking in the view from above at the beautiful Ilulissat Icefjord Centre.

Day 3 - August 29, 2024 - Into the Northwest Passage

Today we stepped foot for the first time on Greenland’s tundra 🇬🇱 We hiked to take in the views and enjoyed beachcombing, photography, and interpretation from our talented expedition team including naturalists, ornithologists, and cultural educators from Greenland. A lucky few of us even spotted an eagle—an unexpected animal to see this far north.

Although the last picture may look like an unassuming pile of rocks, it is actually an archaeological relic that serves an important purpose for managing pests. Can you guess what the function of this trap (which is still in use today by Greenlanders) might be?

Day 2 - August 28, 2024 - Into the Northwest Passage

Today we visited beautiful Sisimiut, where we enjoyed the beauty and dynamism of Greenland’s second-largest city. With fantastic landscapes, vibrant culture, and beautiful (and emblematic) colours, we explored the dramatic scenery and rich traditions of this special place. Of course, no cultural exploration would be complete without sampling the local cuisine—our guests tried locally harvested reindeer, whale, and other country food graciously provided by our hosts.

September 2 marks 10 years since the locating of HMS Erebus! Today, we're sailing through the very same waters on our Into the Northwest Passage expedition. What a fitting way to celebrate this incredible milestone!

This weekend, we have a special reason to celebrate! Monday, September 2, marks 10 years since the locating of HMS Erebus!

Parks Canada, the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, the Nattilik Heritage Society, and Gjoa Haven Inuit are celebrating their many collaborative achievements during this year’s Umiyaqtutt Festival, which runs from today, August 30, to September 2. Some of these achievements include:

🎉 The locating of HMS Erebus in 2014 and HMS Terror in 2016

A caterpillar in the high Arctic? The Boloria polaris or Polaris fritillary is one of a just a few Arctic butterflies. Perhaps something you might not expect to find in a place with such a severe environment like Beechey Island, these butterflies are both beautiful and important pollinators 🦋
Tucked in amongst the rocks, the Polaris fritillary caterpillar takes 2 summers to mature before becoming an adult. The larva feed on white bell heather, Arctic willows and a couple of other Arctic plants. Sometimes the smallest creatures are the most interesting.

The stories of a glacier, from start to finish in a single photo taken in Nunavut, Canada on our High Arctic Explorer trip. Croker Bay from above - the glacier trickles down from the Devon Icecap, tens of thousands of years of ice moving downwards before finally calving into the bay below and floating away as a big, beautiful iceberg. With polar bears patrolling the shores nearby, we couldn’t think of a more epic place for a zodiac cruise.

Sometimes you find vibrant colors in the most unlikely places. It was a chilly, overcast day when we called in at Beechey Island, one of the most significant locations from the lost Franklin Expedition, home to three graves from his crew. Open and rocky, at a glance you might think it was vast and empty. But if you closely, there is so much color and life.
This is a sunburst lichen. Lichens are symbioses between a fungi and an algae that together look like something entirely unique. It’s a pretty common lichen you can find around the world, and it’s often found on sunny rocks and tombstones.

It was a bright, sunny morning when we pulled into Salluit for the first time, a northern Inuit community near the Hudson Strait. In fact, was the first time any expedition ship had called in for a visit. The joy was palpable, with so many people taking the time to come say hello, joining us for a day of building connections. What a welcome.

With us we had more than 25 sets of new hockey gear packed up and ready to hand out to the local kids. For 15 years we’ve supported , a non-profit committed to supporting Inuit children in the north of Canada through sports and education. Equipping kids with gear that encourages them to be active and to play is a way to both invest in their future and develop a sense of community. Giving back to the people and places we visit in a meaningful way has long been a core value of ours.

Returning the welcome later on, many locals joined us onboard to share a meal. I don’t think anyone wanted the day to end. Reflecting back at the end of the Heart of the Arctic trip, so many people mentioned Salluit as the day that stands out in their memories; it was truly special.

Disko Island, or Qeqertarsuaq, is an impressive island in Baffin Bay. Just off of the coast of West Greenland, we spent the day hiking the tundra, looking for wildlife and learning about the rich history of the area. One of the 100 largest islands in the world with only about 1,000 inhabitants, if you’re looking to get off the grid, Disko Island couldn’t be more perfect.

Three cheers for big landscapes that make you feel tiny 📣
Kangerlussuatsiaq Fjord in Greenland is dominated by the beautiful tidewater Sermitsiaq Glacier. Now separated from the Greenland Ice Sheet, this dynamic landscape can’t help but bring to mind climate change in the Arctic. Greenland is losing about 270 billion tons of ice per year, contributing to sea level rise.
