NEW UPDATE: Study Permit Changes 2024
Starting January 1, 2024, Canada will raise the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants to $20,635 for a single applicant, addressing the outdated $10,000 requirement set in the early 2000s. The adjustment, representing 75% of the low-income cut-off (LICO), aims to better prepare international students for the cost of living. The government plans targeted pilots to assist underrepresented student cohorts, preventing vulnerability and exploitation.
The announcement builds on previous reforms to the International Student Program, emphasizing quality services and housing from learning institutions. Measures, including potential visa limitations, may be taken to ensure institutions adequately support international students for the September 2024 semester.
Updates on temporary policies include the extension of the 20-hour-per-week off-campus work limit until April 30, 2024, and the continuation of online study counting towards a post-graduation work permit for programs starting before September 1, 2024. However, the policy providing an additional 18-month work permit for post-graduation work permit holders expiring up to December 31, 2023, will not be extended.
These changes reflect Canada's commitment to supporting international students and acknowledging their contributions to the country's social, cultural, and economic well-being.
