TANZANIA - FEATURE PRESENTATION: “PEMBA and Zanzibar, with a side of… Tanzanian Safari”

Part 1: “An Introduction to Tanzania and Zanzibar”
We've been busy again - Zanzibar and Tanzania destination preparation wise… As a result we’re now adding a 3 part presentation of not only Pemba, but also of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania travel destinations. Enjoy!

Tanzania is a remarkable country in the Great Lakes area of East Africa.
(Yes, there is a Great Lakes area in Africa as well. Freshwater aquarium enthusiasts know it quite well as this is where the amazing African Cichlids are from.)

There are two main regions in Tanzania:
- The mainland area (formerly known as Republic of Tanganyika)
- The Zanzibar archipelago (formerly known as People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba)

The two united in 1964, forming the current United Republic of Tanzania. To this day, Zanzibar is still a semi-autonomous region.

Here’s what you can experience in Tanzania:
- The amazing Mt. Kilimanjaro - aka "the Roof of Africa" and Africa’s highest mountain, standing at 5,895 m/ 19,341 ft.
- World’s largest inactive volcanic caldera in the world – the Ngorongoro crater. It is so large that the whole Washington D.C. can fit inside it (260 km2/ 100 sq. miles).
- The most superlative and fascinating of the African Great Lakes: Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi. In Tanzania, the latter is actually known as Lake Nyasa.
- The vast and fascinating wildlife conservation areas in the Serengeti Ecosystem area, including the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- Any of the other National Parks (there’s 16 of them). Altogether, the conservation areas cover a staggering 38% of the total country surface!
- Africa’s largest and oldest nature reserve – the Selous Game Reserve. Go and see the world’s largest herds of elephants, along with numerous rhinos, buffalos, hippos, lions and leopards. Note that we don’t condone, nor support hunting for sport. Visit the North side of this reserve, where no hunting is allowed. This area is reserved for photographic safaris.
- The amazing Zanzibar archipelago, with its remarkable mix of idyllic, paradise like islands, exotic culture and history, and a spectacular coral reef.

ZANZIBAR: The “Spice Islands” of the Indian Ocean
The Zanzibar Archipelago, is composed of three main islands – Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia and many smaller islands surrounding them. Note that the latter is not part of the Zanzibar semi-autonomous Zanzibar and it is administered by the mainland government.

Zanzibar is a place with an exotic mix of incredible tropical beauty, Islamic culture, and a fascinating history. When studying the history of this place you will discover amazing tales of several colonial waves, slave trade, immigration from all over the world, pirates and spice trade. The latter lead to the islands’ nickname of “Spice Island”.

In the next post we will focus on visiting the island of Pemba, in the Zanzibar archipelago and the Manta Resort, our exciting new partners.
