Thrivability Montreal

Thrivability Montreal A Monthly Conversation Series/Une série mensuelle de discussions What can we learn from them?
* How can we learn from each other and our own experiences?
(2)

[French will follow]

Thrivability Montreal is a monthly conversation series to explore new ways of leading and working in organizations. The series was started by several of us who shared the following questions:
* How can our organizations be more “thrivable” – successful and sustainable themselves, but also deeply fulfilling for the people involved, enriching for the communities they serve, and

in harmony with nature?
* What if we think of organizations as living ecosystems? How would that change what we do?
* Are there examples of organizations that already operate with that view? And how can we find the courage to try new ways of thinking and interacting? We'll be gathering in person on the final Friday of every month from 5-7pm. For more details and to RSVP, please visit our website! We hope you can join in the conversation!

**************************************

Does this sound familiar? This is why we do this work.

"That point in life where you want to create something incredibly beautiful, but the business and tax hurdles to jump over seem insurmountable, and all you want to do is quit, but you can't because you finally come to the sickening realization that this is just the way things are right now, and if you don't continue with this dream you'll likely forever regret not knowing what would have happened if you'd just pushed through, but still your pi**ed off because you know the economic system is inherently flawed toward the production of death and most of our tax dollars are going to the military... Ya. That's me right now. That's us right now. Don't try to help. There's no way to help. Just feel the inconsistency of this bu****it. Really feel how ill-aligned it is with Life. Maybe something righteous and productive will come from the anger, but for now all I have is anger, and that's productive enough for me in this moment... Thanks for listening... Now, I'm going to finish this budgetary statement, play some music, and go to bed. Goodnight world."

"What if companies had Mission Questions instead of Mission Statements? How much more engaging and inviting would this be than the typical bland pronouncements about “being number one” or “being the best”? Why do you want to be number one? What learning, discoveries and milestones – what unfolding story – is to be found on that path? What are you all wildly curious about? What compels you to come together in this work because you can’t gain enough insight into the story alone?"

Montrealers: Please consider participating in this stunning program to hone your skill in "hosting" participatory meetings, organizations and communities. It will be led by the wise and talented Lisa Gravel and Juan C Londono A, with some of my favorite people as guest speakers (well, including me, actually!). It takes place over several weeks (on weekend afternoons), giving you an opportunity to apply and integrate what you're learning. If you lead an organization, consider sending several people. This is the most important skillset there is. And this is a jewel of an opportunity.

In last month's Thrivable World Quest exploration, our treasure included 7 key conditions for personal meaning at work. Which gems are already present in your own work? What pearls would you ilke to add?

http://www.thrivableworld.org/uncategorized/the-meaning-of-life-at-work/

In our most recent exploration of what makes an organization “thrivable,” we looked at the personal meaning people find in their work and in their workplaces: Where do we find it? How do we create ...

Wisdom from the Tehran Thrivable World Quest crew in yesterday's exploration of Meaning in thrivable orgs: "When we were talking about what would change and what would it be like if on a scale of 1-10 all the meaningful things were up to 10, people said it would be boring some said it is the ups and downs that make the ups more adorable and desirable, some said 10 is not a fixed state, when we aim for our current 10 and go for it, we will have new horizons ahead of us after reaching 10 and it will seem as midway again."

04/24/2014

"Sometimes we get so excited about hosting collaboration and participation that it's easy to forget the role of the heroes." - from Tim Merry's video blog today.

That ties in beautifully with today's Thrivable World Quest exploration of Meaning in organizations. Cape Town is the first city to embark and (thanks to MeetingSphere) I see that much of what they find meaningful is finding ways to be heroes - and being appreciated for it.

"I love to be of service and to see the positive results..."
"being able to embark on something you always dreamed of..."
"seeing the influence and impact of my work..."

It's the mirror image of the first island we explored in January of Heroic Cause. The world needs organizations to stand for something heroic. And within that, each of us needs to find a way to express our inner superhero.

Fascinating paradox - everyone needs to be in service of something larger than themselves, and yet we also need to create space for each of us to shine.

Belina Raffy arrived in Montreal a little over a year ago, bringing "applied improv" skills, generosity and sparkling humor. Since then, the community has been noticeably transformed. The local network of changemakers and pioneering organizational leaders has become more connected, more playful, more courageous, more passionate - more thrivable - because of what she's shared with us. Now, she's preparing to spread applied improv and her own brand of magic in a string of countries - often where it's acutely needed. And she's documenting the journey in a book called Using Improv to Save the World. That can only be good. This is an incredibly important contribution to the world we want to see. If you know how vital improv is, please join me in supporting her campaign. http://startsomegood.com/uitstw

Thrivable World

Thrivable World

"There is a great difference between defending life and befriending it. Defending life is often about holding on to whatever you have at all cost. Befriending life may be about strengthening and supporting life's movement toward its own wholeness. It may require us to take great risks, to let go, over and over again, until we finally surrender to life's own dream of itself." pg 257. My Grandfather's Blessings, by Rachel Naomi Remen

The Hidden Treasure of Heroic Cause

How is Heroic Cause different from Mission and Vision? What becomes possible when we strive for the heroic? Where do we see that already happening (even a little), and what can we learn from those pioneers? What does it take to work toward a Heroic Cause? And what does it give?

These were the questions behind last month's exploration in the Thrivable World Quest in five cities. And here are two "harvests" that resulted: "The Hidden Treasure of Heroic Cause" and "The Life-Cycle of the Heroic Organization."

What are your thoughts and reactions?
