In the past:
The page was born in 2011 as an Adventure Race team page for Team Merrell before ARWS in Costa Rica. Later it chanced team members and name to Out

door Rødovre where we had some good fights in the Danish championship and top finishes in stage races in China. Before Eco Challenge in Fiji each team needed a page and this was the obvious choice for my Canadian Team Atlas that finished strong in 13. Place.Latest winning the European Championship with my Estonian freinds. All along Lars have been the core figur on the team, therefore it’s natural that this page follows his venture.

Meet the people behind Atlas Explorers
We’re Lars Bukkehave and Maria Winther, two mountain guides with a shared passion for adventure, exploration, and helping others experience the extraordinary.

Lars Bukkehave
Mountain Guide, Athlete and Explorer

Despite his Danish roots, Lars has always felt a pull toward the mountains. He spent his childhood savings to attend the Mountain School “Yamnuska” in Canada, sparking a lifelong dedication to outdoor pursuits. Today, he teaches Nordic skiing, ski touring, and ice climbing.

Lars’ drive to push boundaries has taken him to the top of competitive adventure racing, with wins in World Cups, European Championships, and the legendary Patagonia Expedition Race. But for Lars, the medals come second to the personal growth found in the journey.

Maria Winther
Mountain Guide and Adventurer

Maria has always embraced challenges in nature. From motocross and skydiving to mountaineering and skiing, she’s lived life on the edge, culminating in her full-time guiding career. Maria thrives in the balance of pushing limits and soaking in the beauty of wild landscapes.

Together, we don’t just guide - we explore. As a team, we’ve taken on some extraordinary expeditions, including being the first to ski 855 kilometers self-sufficiently from SW to the East Coast of Greenland.

At Atlas Explorers, we feel incredibly fortunate to have found what drives us: creating big and small adventures in breathtaking environments.

Our goal? To equip others with the skills to explore on their own, and maybe even inspire them to dream of their own expeditions one day.

Tailormade glacier course at the most inaccessible DNT hut in Norway 🧊🏠

We have had the privilege of training two adventurous groups in glacier rescue. They’re preparing for a crossing of the icecap in Greenland next spring and what better place to do that, than the most remote hut in Norway ?

Demmevasshytta is located by Hardangerjøkulen in Norway. The cabin has one of the country's finest locations right next to the Rembesdalsskåkji glacier. It’s a very fractured glacier, which has a lot of beautiful blue ice and technical areas to train and play on. The cabin is also one of the most inaccessible cabins in Norway. The hike in includes two glacier crossings, a technical terrain to pass through and lots of height meters - the perfect circumstances for a group training for an expedition.

Our daytime was spend on the glacier learning to understand the crevasses and how to avoid ending up in a situation where rescue will be needed. That being said, did we also train on how to pull your buddy up and self rescue.

The evenings was spend on theory and sharing knowledge about other things to take into consideration when crossing the massive icecap, of course while eating bunch of pancakes 🤓

Team Atlas Adventure Racing

Team Atlas is built on character and experience. Although we hail from across Canada and all the way to Denmark, our shared drive, enthusiasm, and our candid communication makes it seem like there's hardly any distance between us at all. We speak three different languages, so sometimes things are lost in translation, but usually with humorous results. Because we live in vastly different environments, we all bring our unique skill-sets to the table. Karine is a champion cyclist and total badass, Jean-Yves is the best teammate ever, Lars is a master navigator, and he and Team Captain Alex Provost are multi-champion adventure racers. After racing on competing teams for a decade, Alex and Lars joined forces in 2018 and won the Patagonia Expedition Race.
