From August 19 to 23, we welcomed the eighth cohort of NS students for their orientation! The week featured guest speakers, including Inuit from Nunavik, Nunavut, and those currently living in Montreal, along with a Kanien'kehá:ka guest from Kahnawake. (Final post 4/4)

On August 22 and 23, William and Katelyn-Joy Tiktaq from Iqaluit taught the students drum dances. William explained the Qilauti, the Inuktitut name for the drum, including its parts and how it is used. He described how men bend down with each beat while drumming, and women do so after the second beat. He encouraged the students to learn drum dances and gather knowledge from elders to preserve Inuit culture, highlighting the importance of passing this knowledge to future generations. Katelyn-Joy also taught throat-singing, and the couple took pride in sharing their cultural expertise with the students.

On Tuesday morning, August 20, Olivia Ikey gave a motivational talk to the Nunavik Sivunitsavut students. She spoke about the differences between Nunavik and southern Quebec, particularly how life in the south is more fast-paced and time-driven. In contrast, she explained, life in Nunavik is more relaxed and flexible when it comes to time. She reassured the students that they would adapt to city life while studying at the CEGEP level. Olivia also explained the importance of preparing for classes and managing time effectively to achieve academic success.

On Monday afternoon, August 19, Kenneth Deer, a Kanien'kehá from Kahnawake, presented a land acknowledgment with Nunavik Sivunitsavut students. He began by honoring nature—land, trees, birds, animals, and all living beings—emphasizing the gifts nature provides and explaining the importance of always starting his presentations with this respect. He also shared that the name for the land now known as Montréal is Tiohtià:ke.

Kenneth Deer is deeply involved in decolonization efforts through education, advocacy, and the preservation of Indigenous rights. A long-time advocate for Indigenous sovereignty, he focuses on reclaiming Kanien'kehá:ka land and culture, raising awareness about the impacts of colonization, and advocating for Indigenous land rights.

On Monday morning, August 19, we were honored to welcome Qiallak Nappaaluk from Kangiqsujuaq, alongside Lukasi Nappaaluk and Jobie Arnaituq, for a storytelling session. Qiallak opened the orientation by lighting the qulliq to bless the start of the school year, sharing her wisdom and knowledge of Inuit culture. As she lit the qulliq, she explained its significance, noting that it requires patience and care. She reflected on how, in the past, Inuit ancestors relied on the qulliq for survival, using it to warm their igloos and cook meals. Additionally, she spoke about the importance of understanding one’s family tree and its role in preserving Inuit identity and heritage.

Law 14 in Quebec, which strengthens the protection of the French language, could negatively impact Inuktitut and other Indigenous languages by limiting the use of these languages in educational and public settings. This may hinder efforts to preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages and cultures. To support Indigenous students, you can sign the petition to exempt them from the requirements of Law 14 in Quebec:

WHEREAS the Act respecting French, the official and common language of Québec (2022, c. 14, hereinafter “Law 14”) was put in place to preserve the French language in Québec, without taking into account the preservation of Indigenous languages;

Lauri Mulucto, a graduate of the NS program in 2023. Where is she now since she has completed the program? 🤩🎉

"After finishing at NS, I continued my studies at a different college. Attending Dawson was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed my time there until I found out I was pregnant during the winter semester. Now, I'm taking a break from school. I'm still living in Montreal so that my daughter can continue her schooling there, as the education system is better compared to where I was before."

We would like to thank ESUMA and ᒪᑭᕝᕕᒃ - Makivvik for their donations to Nunavik Sivunitsavut for the graduation trip to Sápmi (Norway), and to Taqralik Partridge for suggesting which places to visit in the country.

Some time in May, the Inuit students from Nunavik, who studied at NS for a year in Montréal, celebrated their success by travelling to Sápmi, where they shared and exchanged cultures with the Sámi in Alta, Kautokeino and Karasjok.

We are thankful for the unforgettable memories created through this unique experience! ❤️
