So Mr. Line Honours pulled it off again. Two in a row is starting to look a lot like a pattern Wally. Oh Yeah and we are going to ignore those unidentified rumours (John Collins) of being over the line early and port tack fouling Grace. Obviously John had to many Tom Collins to be a good Witness as Richard Hudson and I had coffee today and he isn’t complaining. It sounds like everyone had a great day on the water.

Hello Everyone
I just want to say "Thank You" to each and everyone of you for making this year's Christmas Party a real Blast.

This was a group effort that began with a great turnout by all of you, coupled by your willingness to get into the Christmas spirit (for some of you more than one spirit).

My highlight was the effort all of you put into creating your own lyrical twists for the Christmas Carol Showdown. I hope someone was able to record the Twelve Days of Christmas as that broadway production took true grit and flexibility to perform. Well Done Starlight Express !!

Thank you also to Jim Mendria for providing the Photos.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of You and Yours and I look forward to seeing all of you in 2019.

Hello Facebook Group!

I'm back from our vacation in Arizona and feeling the cold.
I am taking on the role of Communication Director for the club and looking forward to developing the FaceBook page. The racers have been amazing at submitting things to post and the whole page has become a colourful and exciting photo gallery of boats, racers, and their fun activities.

I would like to encourage members to send me their awesome pictures and boating experiences and to invite other members to join. FaceBook can be fun! You do not have to be a racer to participate
If members are already FB users this is very simple.
Search for the Schooner Cove Yacht Club group and join up! Another way to "join in" is to make comments on existing posts or even just "like" something. There are a few members who do this and I'm sure it is appreciated by those who submit photos and do write ups.

Dean Dreger, our new Fleet Captain, sends me the weekly racing photos and information and I always look forward to seeing pictures of all the beautiful boats.
Thanks so much.
Linda Watson (Communications Director)

Here are some more pictures taken from Wally’s Boat on Sunday Dec 3rd. Thank you Wally for sharing.

Just a reminder about our Christmas Party which takes place immediately after the Dec 16th Race at the Rocking Horse Pub. Everyone is invited and encouraged to come. There will also be a white elephant gift exchange for those that want to participate. A wrapped gift under $20.00 is required to play. John Collins will be Santa/referee for this. For some reason Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa pops into my head.

Kindest Regards

I would like to thank all of those who participated in our Wednesday Night Races this past year. We managed over 20 races, some with strong winds and others without.

Special thanks goes to John Collins and the crew of Spud for being instrumental in introducing burgers after the race. Good food and good friends swelled our numbers such that we nearly ran out of chairs at the afterdeck. More than 30 people were served after our last race. Thanks again, Spud!

The attached pictures are of a couple of boats enjoying the wind and even if you didn’t race as well as you hoped there were always the sunsets... Walter Clark

It is looking like variable winds tomorrow around race time. This will be the last Wednesday night race for the season. Please let John Collins know how many from your boat will be staying for burgers.

Last week we had 7 boats out. The winner was Calais followed by Raven 1 and then Sobyeski. Calais has been in the winner’s circle before but welcome to the other two. You will note that for Raven 1 this was their first time out and yes I did give the Commodore’s boat a favourable rating!

We also had 28 stay for refreshments and a burger. This included two guests from Australia. One was “Matty” and she has kayaked from Juneau Alaska to Victoria. Quite a feat for a young lady!

The pictures are of a great sunset, Raven 1/Sobyeski, and Starlight/Calais.

Skippers’ meeting at the usual 6:00 PM

I guess you really can’t call it “racing" when only one boat actually crossed the start line, and even then only momentarily. With no wind the flood tide pushed all boats backwards!

There was however a highlight to the evening. Georgina Martin and her daughter Renata supplied chili with a caesar salad, followed up by an assortment of pastries. It was all awesome and our thanks to them.

I will be away for the next few weeks so Tim Rann has agreed to be the race officer in my absence. Hopefully the winds will favour him as I have not been too successful the last two weeks.

As you can see from the pictures there is no visible difference between the start of the race and the end.

As I will be away for the week I thought I would share with you our experience last night.

We had great winds which made for a quick race. Early Dawn decided to add an extra island into the course but still managed to finish a respectable third. Regalo and Spud had a grudge match with John Collins contributing a little extra money to the kitty.

The pictures are of Spud heeled over closing on Regalo, Spud and Early dawn with a self-unloading log barge in the background and Spud in the evening sun.

Please let John Collins know if you will be racing before next Monday evening and how many on your crew for food purposes.

Thanks to the Duttons and the rest of the Spud crew for cooking the burgers last night.

08/01/2018

Last week we had a great race with strong winds and 6 boats participating. Even though it was one of our longest races of the season it ended with 4 boats crossing the finish essentially together! The three lead boats in the final leg of the race allowed Regalo to pass for the win. Thank you to their skippers! Second place was to Breez’n and third to Linden Lea.

Follow that up with burgers put on by team “Spud” and it couldn’t get much better.

The winds for tomorrow night are currently forecast to be in the 6 to 10 knot range from the southeast.

Skippers’ meeting is the usual 6:00 and please advise me if your boat will be out and how many you anticipate for food following the race. We need this as soon as you know for planning purposes.

The pictures are closeups of Spud and Sobyeski and then three boats within meters of the finish line.

We actually had an amazing race last week.............until the wind totally died! We had 10 knot winds at the start and then 2/3 through the race absolutely nothing. We could have waited until the wind shifted but the smell of burgers made us start our engines. Just a reminder that the kitty was a bit short after eating. If you had a burger you owe Joh Collins $3.

The pictures are of Grace, Spud getting set to raise their spinnaker, and foredeck on Starlight Express.

The winds are forecast to be in the 6 plus knots from the NW at race time.

We would like to try something new this week. In order to have burgers for “around” the right number of people I would like you to respond to me if your boat will be racing and a “guess” as to the number of crew that would probably buy a burger. We don’t want too little or too much food.

There may be a need for crew so if you just want to get out on the water this may be your chance.

Skippers’ meeting at 6:00.

Day #7 what a spectacular day that started out with an eggy breakfast hosted by Doug and Jo and help from Terry and Shirley. A delicious omelette in a bag! We had a couple of strange salty dogs join us 😳. The rest of the day was spent exploring. Photos are all about this beautiful city and our beautiful boats.

Day #6 is Vancouver Rowing Club. What a lovely place to be. Stanley Park provided a refuge from the heat as everyone headed out in all different directions to either meet family or friends or to just take part in all the city had to offer. The club also had the Carver Bar and Grill where you get to grill your own burger with all the fixings, a great beer selection, and you get a full up close view of the rowers with the city skyscrape in the background. One thing which I will remember for next time is that Theatre Under the Stars is playing in the park all summer and tickets are easy to purchase. Boating and the city wow this makes this new boater pretty happy!

Day #5 and Skoots’ first time into Vancouver. What a thrill to go under the Lions Gate Bridge. Today was sweltering hot as we moored at Burrard Yacht Club. Walking to Lonsdale Quay is very doable and lunch was delicious.
Sunsets and reflections on the skyline were the highlight tonight.

Day # 4 of the Summer Cruise was a lazy hot day on Bowen. Some went shopping, the more ambitious headed out on various trail walks, and some enjoyed local restaurants and pubs. We ended the day with a raucous game of Bocce. Terry did a super job of officiating and the winners received some pretty coveted prizes. Third prize was basting brushes, second prize was paper napkins with crab pictures on them and first prize a game called Urban Myth. Terry needed to explain the game to Doug and Linda.
We had many laughs.

Day #3 of the Summer Cruise "great adventure" brought us to Union Steamship Company Marina on Bowen Island. What a busy summer place. Our hard working cruise directors, Jo and Doug, booked the Tuscany Pizza Bistro for dinner last night and the pictures are of those of us who attended.Ed and Jean Resler's photo was very fuzzy so this photographer got a shot of them this morning ... for some reason my camera focus was working better😂😳 ??? The food and drinks were top notch.Cheers to everyone.

Day # 2 of the Summer Cruise was a stop at Secret Cove overnight. It was a quick run from John Henry but slip assignments were very creative. "Play Hooky" had another strange slip. Luckily there was a lot of SCYC members to help! We had a great happy hour next to "Little Voices" and everyone headed to bed early for early departures to Bowen Island and the Union Steamship Company Marina. All in all a great day two.

The winds have been varied over the last few days and here is hoping that there will be reasonable winds tomorrow evening.

Last week we had four boats out in strong winds. Starlight Express edged out Regalo to finish first by about 5 feet! Spud was third. We appreciated Scott and Janette Brown joining in our race in Breez’n. The pictures are of their beautiful Jeanneau.

The current wind forecast for tomorrow night is a consistent 10 knots from the northwest. Should be a sunny night as well. Please join us.

Last week we had what would be described as fickle winds. They were light at the start, dropped to zero and then ended up at 14 knots from a different direction! We had 4 boats out. Thankfully Regalo I took a different course than the rest at the beginning of the race that made all the difference. Regalo and Grace finished the race with Starlight Express and Early Dawn retiring. The pictures are of a happy crew on Early Dawn (nice flags as well). We know why they call it Early Dawn as that is about when it gets back from a race! Mike you said you wanted to be in more of my narratives.

The second picture is of Starlight and Grace rounding Amelia and preparing to hoist their spinnakers with a hoped for wind. This did not work too well for Starlight.

07/04/2018

Last week we had 6 boats compete in close to 10 knot winds which were much higher than the weather forecast had predicted. One of the boats was Linden Lea as it was re-acquired by Andrea/Andrew. I forgot how fast that boat was and gave it too high a rating. After the start I did not see it again until we were on the dock! Obviously the winner was Linden Lea followed by Starlight Express and then Spud.

Our thanks to Andrea/Andrew for putting on ribs and the fixings after the race. It was awesome. Especially the free part!

The current forecast for tonight is for steady NW winds at 6 knots.

The pictures are of Spud racing to the start, Starlight chasing Grace and then Starlight against the rays of sun breaking through the clouds.

Last week we had 5 boats compete, with Starlight Express coming in first followed by Calais and then Regalo. The winds were expected to be light but we were surprised with 5-8 knot winds for most of the race. Calais came from behind with a great spinnaker run to capture second, and ever since Tim Rann had the bottom of Starlight Express cleaned the boat has been almost unstoppable!
Our hats off to John Collins and the crew of Spud for a great job on the post-race burgers and hot dogs.
The current forecast is for light winds on Wednesday evening, however the forecast has been wrong the last two Wednesdays.

The pictures are of Calais, Starlight Express and Seeker/Spud neck and neck.

Skippers meeting at the usual 6:00.
