"EC and the PTSOs recommend that facilities that host equestrian-related activities only allow personnel needed to take care of the facilities and our equine partners on their premises. This includes facility owners, facility managers, equine caretakers, providers of equine-related essential services (e.g. veterinarians, farriers), and boarders or owners providing equine-related minimum standards of care*. Non-essential personnel, including students, friends, family, the public, and boarders or owners who are not providing equine-related minimum standards of care*, are encouraged to remain off the premises.
*Individuals are to continue operating under the minimum standards of care outlined in the National Farm Animal Care Council Code of Practice to ensure the feeding, care and movement of equines."

In an effort to minimize the transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19), Equestrian Canada (EC) and the Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs) recommend the following as best practices concerning equestrian facility operations, consistent with the recommendations of applicable health authori...

Travel Highway 287, north of Three Forks, and your eyes will certainly be drawn to a hill where you will see a herd of animals. What are they you think--elk, deer, antelope maybe? DID YOU KNOW?

Alfalfa tends to be more nutrient-dense than most grasses when harvested at the same stage of maturity, and it's a very efficient source of protein and calcium -- which leads many people to believe that alfalfa is the best hay to feed in winter for warmth, due to the metabolic heat that your horse generates to metabolize the extra protein.

If you're feeding alfalfa this winter, even hay that has been harvested months or years previously, you need to be aware that your horse could be at risk for potentially deadly blister beetle toxicity.

"The blister beetle (Epicauta) is highly toxic to sheep and cattle, but primarily to horses," says Dr. Benjamin Espy. "As little as four (4) to six (6) grams of blister beetles can be deadly to a 1100-pound horse. Blister beetles swarm in alfalfa fields and are drawn into bales by accident. Even small parts of these beetles are toxic to a horse, and whole insects need not be present to be dangerous."

If you suspect your horse is showing signs of toxicity, call your veterinarian immediately. While there is no antidote for cantharidin, the toxin found in blister beetles, your veterinarian may still be able to save your horse by providing supportive care to combat dehydration, help evacuate toxins from the gastrointestinal tract, and delay potential absorption.

Check alfalfa for the presence of blister beetle prior to feeding and consult your to learn more about this very dangerous condition, especially if you feed alfalfa hay from a new or unknown harvesting source. Please note that there are many representatives of the species Epicauta, so we encourage you to contact a county agricultural agent to familiarize yourself with the poisonous beetles in our area or the geographical region where the hay you purchase is harvested.

You can read Dr. Espy's article on blister beetle poisoning in full on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/blister-beetle-poisoning

Let your child have a bad ride.
I know you want to protect them from the hardships of this world.
I know you want to give them success and good experiences.
I know you don't want to see them get hurt. To see them fall. To see them fail.
But, hear me out, let your child have a bad ride.

Let them cry the tears of frustration.
Let them shake the sand out from the inside of their riding pants.
Let them face the fear building inside of them.
Let them step back on again.

Yes, let your child have a bad ride.
Let them hate the horse that challenges them.
Let them learn what fight and passion and ambition mean.
Let them realize that when they refuse to quit the horse will take the time to listen.

Grant them the joy of realizing that they are connecting with another living being.
Grant them the joy of realizing that they, although they are small, can be powerful.
Grant them the joy of seeing their hard work pay off, through the days of tears can come a love unspeakable.

Yes, let your child have a bad ride.
Afterall, life will grant us plenty of them.

*not my words, but I loved them so much I just had to share.* written by Sarah Crouse!

What is wrong with this picture?
Answer: Nothing!

Each winter we get many calls from people concerned after seeing horses with snow on their backs. If you see snow building up on a horse’s back or rump, you are looking at proof that body heat is not escaping through the hair to melt the snow, and their coat is keeping them properly insulated. Also, the best way for a horse to stay warm is by eating! You can also see in this photo that the horse has access to a shelter, but is choosing to stay out in the snow and eat πŸ™‚
