Artwork at the stage - part 6:
We spotted this small pot a few weeks ago at and knew straight away that it would be right at home in the stage! There has been a family of crows in this cove for as long as we’ve been here and they are an ever present source of joy and wonder as we watch them forage, congregate, rob from the gulls, harass the eagles and successfully expand their family with each new season.
On a side note, and more importantly, I am also fortunate to call said Mud Nymph potter a friend who has meant a lot to me throughout the years in her ever ready ‘I’ve got your back’ kind of way - she’s also that rare sort of person who will stand up to fight beside you when she’s got nothing to gain - and for that, especially, I’ll be forever grateful ❤️

Artwork at the stage - part 5:
This evocative piece, ‘Inland Pond’ is by the one and only Barbara Houston!!
We had the good fortune of happening upon Barbara’s Sheep Shop around 3 years ago when our groundskeeper, Timber, was a wee pup and earlier this summer, when he heard we were looking for a special piece of artwork for the stage, he insisted on a return visit.
This image, for me, harkens back to Central Newfoundland where I grew up - not to mention the ever, yet never changing scenery of the trees and ponds along almost all of our highways and byways.
If you’ve not been, BarbaraHouston ArtStudio and Gallery in Bonavista is worth a visit for the location, the building, the artwork, and especially for the Barbara :)

There are 3 or 4 anchors embedded in the ground around the stage. I don’t ever look at them without wondering if, when the fisherman hauled them up from the cove for the last time, he knew that was it or if he thought he was merely putting them away for the winter. Either way, in the time that had lapsed since the last use of the anchors, a small stand of trees had grown around them - I ultimately decided to remove them to open up the view of the cove but kept the trunks to use as a fence - primarily to keep me from falling in when I was building the shower.
I somehow suspect I am better able to imagine his life than he would have been able to think that one day people would be standing on that very spot, taking showers! ⚓️ 🚿

The town adjacent to us, Harbour Grace, has the remnants of some amazing built heritage including the oldest stone Gothic Revival church in Newfoundland.
Many of these structures would have been built during a time when Harbour Grace was a thriving community that rivalled St. John’s in population and importance.
Some of these buildings still stand proudly as functional spaces and others are in various stages of restoration.
Some, sadly, are in ruins and others are disused and appear to be getting reclaimed by nature.

Artwork at the stage - part 3

Some people may not think of pottery as art, but the people who made a lot of these pieces are true artists. They honed their talents over many years and have created beautiful and practical pieces that we are delighted to have for use at the stage. We have known several of these potters for many (many) moons and have always admired their work and creativity and appreciate who they are as kind and caring people.

Artwork at the stage - part 2:
What do we need to say other than Janet Davis!! An incredible artist and an amazing human.
In Janet’s own words, “These Smudge Herring paintings remind us that we are in this together! As much as we are all individuals, there is great comfort in knowing that we are not alone in our struggles…”
Who can argue with that!
You can find Janet’s work (and Janet, if you’re lucky) at Norton’s Cove Studio and Cafe in New-Wes-Valley and we highly recommend a visit if you’re anywhere in the vicinity (and even if you’re not)!

A year ago today, I was really excited about getting the walls closed in - today we’re enjoying being on the inside of those walls 🙂
The swordfish bills above the door were found at the bottom of a harbour by the hard-working crew of Clean Harbours Initiative who are doing an amazing job of cleaning up our harbours and beaches!!

Artwork at the stage - part 1:
When Amelia Earhart began the world’s first solo transatlantic flight by a woman, her launch point was from an airfield just the other side of the hill to where we are. And while we weren’t here on that very day, I’m confident had we been, we’d have been able to watch as she slipped the surly bonds of earth on the start of her journey - crossing Conception Bay to head toward the shores of Northern Ireland.
I like to imagine that she flew directly over the original stage that day and whoever was around splitting their fish would have looked up to see the undercarriage of her low flying plane as it roared overhead. Who knows!?
We chose one of these paintings by Jean Smith to celebrate that incredible feat! 🛫🌊🛬

Warning: exciting post about the driveway ahead 🙃 When we first decided to clear the property of some trees, we started with where we thought a driveway and a path to the future stage might go. And while I may not be a stickler for details, I sure do know how to draw up a set of professional plans 🤣
We also had the place booked off for ourselves to enjoy a couple days earlier this week and I ended up scheduling a paving job in there instead - not quite the fun, relaxing time I’d promised Milady 😬

I’d been struggling with where to put a bbq with our limited deck space. I really didn’t want it to obstruct the view. I’d been wracking my brain (aloud, obviously 😆) when a friend suggested I use the area on this side of the building which, until then, had been wooded and completely neglected.
Thankful for the suggestion and pleased with how the space turned out!

Then and now. The previous stage got lost in years and years of overgrowth. After we bought a half acre, densely wooded lot, the old collapsed fishing stage eluded our sight for the better part of a year. My excitement at the discovery was great - as were my wild imaginings as to how in the world we could possibly remove the old structure and erect another. Much to my own surprise, we did it!! 🪚🪓🔨💪🏼😮‍💨😃

The story of our backsplash - or splashback as they call it across the pond: Once we decided that we were going to install a small backsplash, the search for the right one began. We eventually found a shop on Etsy that made splashbacks by using copper sheets which were then torched and hammered to get the colourful patinas… the only problem was that they only shipped within the UK!! After contacting the shop owner/splashback maker and pleading our case 😂 he agreed to make one for us to fit our space and used this image of our cove for inspiration.
We ❤️ it!!

10 things to know about the outdoor shower:
1. It’s made entirely of cedar and smells superb. 2. It has a 15 gallon water heater and the water is very hot. 3. It is perched atop a steep rock and overlooks a small cove. 4. It affords magnificent views of the bay. 5. It is supplied with Aveeno almond scented body wash and shampoo. 6. It has both rain and hand held heads. 7. It has a light attached on the outside that shines into the cove at night providing for a pretty magical experience. 8. Even if the temperature is 5°C, it is still wonderful. Don’t ask me how I know this. 9. It is approximately 10 feet away from the door to the stage. This distance can be covered quickly if it is only 5°C. Don’t ask me how I know this. 10. There are Turkish cotton robes and big fluffy bath towels available - - but not if you forget to bring them out with you. Don’t ask me how I know this. 📸Ritche Perez

If you’ve been enjoying the evening lost in conversation or relaxing in the hammock after a fun-filled day, no need to worry about finding your way back to the stage. The path is lit all the way from the picnic table to the door. If, on the other hand, you’ve forgotten to turn the path light on, good luck to you and yours 😬

When deciding on a name for the property, we tried to draw from one of its existing features. We’d been told by locals who remember the previous stage, that the people who fished out of here had metal rods driven into the rocks to which they would tie their boats using shore-fasts. At the end of the day, given the craggy nature of the rocks that formed the quay, it practically named itself :)

Our groundskeepers, Timber and Stanley, are at risk of losing their summer jobs. Timber keeps sneaking off to play bocce ball and Stanley, well… he’s a cat. For outdoor fun when you’re at the stage, we’ve got you covered. Under the bed, you’ll find bocce ball, horseshoes, insulated picnic bags and, god forbid you need them, umbrellas!

Looking for some shade at lunchtime (it can happen) or just want to hang? The picnic table and aerial mat are strategically placed above Piper’s Cove in a small grove of trees allowing for filtered sunlight as you gently sway to the sound of waves lapping on the beach below. A great place to hang on a hot afternoon.
