Often, being in the right place is enough. But then the right time comes along too, and leaves you in awe. On a private training booking this past August, we were fortunate to witness the wondrous magic of the night sky. My guest Alex was an enthusiastic landscape photographer, as am I. Around 11pm we went down to the shoreline of the upper set at with our cameras hoping to shoot some stars, and were elated and filled with gratitude when the Aurora made an appearance over Jessup’s.

In whitewater we are taught to look ahead at where you want to go, rather than focus on the obstacles in your way. If you focus solely on the rocks, holes, and nasty features in your path you’ll probably have some close encounters with ‘em. Focus instead at the wave trains, tongues, and eddies to get through. This is not to say you should completely ignore the obstacles. Instead, acknowledge them, maintain awareness of them, and then focus on the best path to avoid them. Yet another lesson of the river worth applying in day to day life.

Algonquin Park’s Petawawa River is one of the most beautiful whitewater rivers in Ontario. With powerful rapids and waterfalls, meandering sections of calm water, lakes both mighty (Cedar) and peaceful (looking at you Radiant), towering white and red pines, unique geology, dark night skies and glorious evening light, it’s easy to be in awe of such a river.

But the Petawawa is not just beautiful and awe inspiring. It is a living thing, a teacher, a guide, a friend, an occasional adversary - as true friends sometimes are. The river can feel cold and aloof, unforgiving at times, at others the river will envelop you in the warm embrace of a lover.

River travel is about exploring and developing meaningful relationships - with yourself, with your fellow paddlers, with the natural world, and with the river itself.

What’s so great about packrafting? Well, there are plenty of answers to this question. But an obvious starting point is the portability of these boats. Deflate ‘em, roll ‘em up, and chuck ‘em in the trunk or backseat of your car. No strapping on roof racks, trailers or truck beds required. Running out of garage space for your boats? Drive a compact car but love to paddle? Perhaps packrafting is the answer to all your space-related boating issues. Just one of many reasons these vessels impress.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Intro to Packrafting courses on the Madawaska River.

Your enthusiasm, relentless energy, kindness, and unbridled passion for packrafting made the start to our summer absolutely magical!

One of the wonders of wilderness adventures is a night spent around the fire stargazing. It awakens the primal senses and connects us to our ancient roots. Wherever you are, whether you travel by packraft, canoe, or kayak, you are connected to all before you who have gazed in wonder at the night sky.

Springtime river paddling is a treat for those who enjoy (translation - tolerate) the cold water and weather. There will be fewer early spring paddling days this year due to today’s updated restrictions here in Ontario. We aim to help by continuing to carefully follow public health guidelines in order to curb the spread of Covid-19. If we look out for each other - with perseverance and a touch of luck - we’ll be able to fully enjoy the rivers later during the summer months.

Packraft Adventure Canada has partnered with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) to help promote the protection of the three rivers watershed.

This summer we are offering trips on two of these rivers; the Dumoine and the Coulonge which both flow through unceded Algonquin territory. We will do our part to promote low impact travel practices and awareness of the intrinsic value of these rivers, while introducing our guests to their wild beauty! To get a glimpse of these destinations and the work that CPAWS is doing we recommend taking a look at this neat little video showcasing their initiatives.

CPAWS is working with local communities and stakeholders to maintain the ecological integrity of the rivers in this watershed, promote understanding of their historical and cultural significance, and promote low impact practices for visitors.
