As much as we enjoy the warm weather, we're happy to see the forecast return to more seasonal temperatures over the next few days.

The last winter we experienced conditions like this was in 2020 when we had over 5 cm of water on the lake on February 1st followed by a snowstorm on February 3rd and great ice conditions for the rest of the season.

Part of the beauty of playing outside is that every day brings something different. We can't control what the weather brings but our guides are on the lake daily so that we can make sure that you can safely see the best ice bubbles and features on our tours.

Late afternoon ice checks...

We had a feeling that the rest of Abraham Lake might freeze today so we headed out to see how things are shaping up. The ice is still thin, only 8 cm at Cline Landing and Abraham Slabs, but this is one of the earliest freeze-ups we can remember.

In the meantime, we now have over 45 cm of ice at Preacher's Point where we go on our ice walks and some great ice bubbles as we explore that area.

We often get asked at this time of the year how can we be going on the ice when areas like Windy Point have yet to freeze. The answer has a lot to do with local conditions.

Preacher's Point and Windy Point are over 18 km apart with very different conditions. This means that we usually see the ice form 6 to 8 weeks earlier at the south end than at the other end of the lake, nearly 30 km away. This year, Preacher's Point was frozen by November 3rd while you can see in the pictures from yesterday that the rest of the lake is still very much open water.

This happens for a few reasons that include the water depth, winds and temperatures. At this time of the year you'll usually see significantly colder overnight temperatures at Preacher's Point. For example, the early morning temperature was 5 degrees colder yesterday at Preacher's Point than at Windy Point.

That's why our tour season starts in mid-November each year, when the ice at Preacher's Point is at its prime and weeks before the entire lake is frozen.

We got to see ice bubbles forming as Abraham Lake freezes. The methane rises through the water until it reaches the bottom of the existing ice. The water then freezes around the bubble.
