Coal Point Cottage

Coal Point Cottage Coal Point cottage is nestled on a private peninsula along the shoreline of beautiful Saanich Inlet. Home to a broad spectrum of birds, mammals and marine life.

Our acreage has been preserved in its natural state, boasting rare indigenous plant species. No two days are alike. Ideal for nature lovers, kayakers, divers, cyclists, and artists/writers. Anyone seeking fresh sea air, clear night skies for star gazing/meteor watching, inspiration or serenity. Steps to the beach. 10 minutes from the quaint "book-town" and amenities of Sidney by the Sea, Victoria

International Airport, Ferries to Vancouver, the Gulf Islands and Anacortes U.S.A. Thirty minutes to the sights and sounds of Victoria's bustling inner harbor. Local farms and vineyards, hiking/cycling trails are just a sampling of the many local attractions available to explore and enjoy. The Vancouver Island "foodie"/coffee/tea culture is visibly prevalent. Victoria also has an active arts/music/dance scene. I am personally involved in the Ballroom and Argentine tango community. I speak German fluently, and some French. Our family loves all that Vancouver Island has to offer, and feel privileged to share that knowledge with enquiring guests. Come home to your own cozy refuge after a day of exploring. Your life will be enriched by the experience of visiting Coal Point.

It is highly unusual to have a cougar visit us, but that is exactly what happened last week. Our security cameras alerted us to its presence. I was out until dark working in the yard. The cougar (unbeknownst to me) watched and waited until I went into the house before venturing down our driveway, across the lawn and over to our island.
You can hear me shutting the sliding door seconds before it proceeded across our yard.

Unfortunately, the gander guarding the nesting goose lost his life. We have learned much about Canada Geese throughout this ordeal. They support one another. Five of six goslings hatched two days after this incident, with another pair of geese stepping in to protect both the new mother and her chicks around the clock! The morning after the gander was killed, six geese appeared, offering what appeared to be their condolences to the widowed goose. More appeared throughout the day. Some consider Canada Geese to be pests, but we humans can learn a lot from them!

What a glorious sunrise! I first noticed the reflection in our bedroom window. It made me rush outside in bare feet and camera, not to miss a moment. What I sadly didn’t capture was the morning birdsong… Kingfisher, Seagulls and Bald Eagle were all outside enjoying the sunrise with me! An awesome moment!!

We seem to often see double rainbows from our property for some reason.

Eagles regularly fish from our island. Mother eagle is teaching her off-spring how it’s done. Watch until the end, when she observes from our heart-shaped oak.

The oaks seem to be struggling this year, dropping leaves in July. It’s very dry, but I have been told by all the experts not to water the island, as it interferes with the natural way of things by making the trees dependent on that water and actually weakening them, and by introducing noxious weeds that could take over. To me, it seems like the trees are dying.
