If you were near the docks in Little Current over the past few days you may have wondered what was happening aboard Grand Heron!?! What was taking place is an elaborate procedure known as an “incline experiment”. This procedure is carried out on a vessel to confirm stability in a variety of loading conditions. In this experiment 15,000lbs is placed on the decks. That weight is then shifted around in 8 movements while measuring heel angle using a 5 meter pendulum suspended above the main deck. Computer modeling then analyzes the data.

Why were we required to undertake this test? The answer is that there are a variety of reasons. Combined with the Heron being refit in 2024 with new, heavier propulsion engines, Transport Canada considers the average weight of a human being to have increased 12kg since this test was carried out in 2008. We were required by Transport Canada to demonstrate that our vessel continues to conform to current regulations. We continue our commitment to safety not only in the summer but year round!
