SPJ Retreats’ 10 Day Edinburgh & Shetland Adventure has come to an end.

Our small group of 15 travelled to Edinburgh before arriving at the most remote isles of Scotland. As we travelled the width and breadth of Shetland we discovered plenty of Shetland oo; learned about the isles’ history and heritage; were taught knitting techniques from experts in their field; visited a croft or two; landed on the most northern tip of the United Kingdom (nothing between there and the Arctic); learned about the archaeological significance of the land; dined in a longhouse and enjoyed delicious cuisine throughout.

We were deeply inspired by Karie Westermann, Di Gilpin, Hazel Tindall, Janette Budge, Donna Smith, Wendy Inkster and Chris Dyer - just to name a few.

That’s a wrap. Today we returned home from our amazing Rosehaven Fibre Retreat in Argentina and Uruguay. With heaps of food, wine, culture, laughs and fibre (yarn, that is), Uruguay was indeed quite the surprise. We visited two small town Manos del Uruguay cooperatives and met the Uruguayan women behind this popular brand of yarn available globally. Manos meaning “hands” …was formed in 1968 to empower women to become self-sufficient. Fun-fact…we were sworn to secrecy but they are the designers/creators of knitwear for some well-known global fashion houses. We learned about their dyeing processes then dyed our own skein of wool to take home. Fun project arriving on our needles soon. We visited a rural factory that processes raw wool into beautiful, luscious roving. We visited a lady who makes lovely eco- dyed yarns. Many of us returned home with a new suitcase filled with merino, alpaca and cotton.

Travel is so much more than visiting the must sees of a destination. The pandemic has made us realise the importance of meaningful travel and getting off the beaten track. It’s very much about the people we meet and their stories.

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. We spent 2 glorious nights in this beautiful UNESCO town - the first settlement in Uruguay with a mix of Spanish and Portuguese influences. The wine has been flowing; the laughs plentiful and now on our way to our countryside pasada for our Uruguayan fibre experiences.

Our Rosehaven South America Fibre Retreat arrived in beautiful Colonia Uruguay after 3 fun filled days in Buenos Aires. We visited a Yarn district where the vibrant Argentinian cotton, merino and alpaca fibres were so inexpensive. We had a private Argentinian cooking class with Pachamama. W.O.W. The food has been amazing with lunch and dinner being 4 hour rituals. We were entertained by local musicians and Tango dancers all before crossing the world’s widest river (Rio de la Plata) separating Argentina from Uruguay. More fibre and wine experiences to follow.

Rosehaven’s South America Fibre Retreat landed in Buenos Aires today. We wasted no time and headed straight to the Yarn District. The day was filled with wonderful surprises including a chance meeting with a local designer/knitter at Lana’s Naturales; a scrumptious lunch at a local restaurant; a visit to a beautiful leather shop and a birthday in the group. Some purchases may have been made, just saying.

She started collaborating with her local yarn shop to put together fabulous Fibre Retreats. Today we begin our journey down to Argentina and Uruguay to meet with Manos del Uruguay and visit the farm and sheep who produce yummy Malabrigo yarns.
