Today's trips are canceled due to rain and wind. However, if you're looking for something to do that's whale related...why not head next door to The Whale Interpretive Centre? They have a great exhibit and nice gifts. Museums are a perfect choice of activity when it's raining.

Have you been out with us to see Cape Breton's beautiful long-finned pilot whales?

Researchers at The Cape Breton Pilot Whale Project are holding a COMPETITION to nickname the whale in the photo below - feel free to go over to their page and suggest a name if you have one in mind.

Would you like to help name a whale?

Every now and then we have an individual in need of a nickname. We are once again inviting you to help - please leave your suggestion in the comments!

We will be accepting names until Saturday November 2nd at 11:59pm - with voting on short-listed suggestions beginning Monday. Names should be based off of the nicks, notches, scarring, and overall shape of the dorsal fin - e.g. something that will be easy to remember when glancing at the photo below.

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Here are some long-finned pilot whale photos from this past summer. While this species appears to have left our coast for the winter, both humpback whales and minkes whales have been seen along our shores this past month. Many of them will soon begin swimming their way south for breeding and calving in warmer waters.

We can't wait to get back out on the water next year to see what whales and other marine life we will find!

It's been a quiet and windy fall! The winter weather seems to be coming early this year with snow already abundant in the Cape Breton highlands. Though there have been no sightings of pilot whales recently, a minke whale was seen foraging along the coast south of Cheticamp just before this last storm.

Our researchers at The Cape Breton Pilot Whale Project are having a naming competition for one of our whales - feel free to head on over to their page and list a suggestion! Names should be based off of the nicks, notches, and overall shape of the dorsal fin, with suggestions being accepted until December 5th (after which a short-listed set will be released for public voting to determine the final name).

Would you like to help name a whale?

In celebration of hitting 1000 likes on this page this past week we are asking for your suggestions in naming this whale! Names should be based off of the nicks, notches, scarring, and overall shape of the dorsal fin - e.g. something that can be remembered when glancing at the photo below. Please leave your suggestion in the comments!

Suggested names will be accepted until noon on Wednesday December 5th, after which we will hold a public vote for shortlisted set of names chosen by the Cape Breton Pilot Whale Project team. We look forward to hearing all your name ideas!

----------------------------
