Rev up your engines and get ready for the 40th Annual Port Alberni Toy Run this weekend!

What started as 8 guys delivering a few toys to the Salvation Army on their motorcycles just before Christmas in 1984 now attracts upwards of 1,500 motorcycles to Port Alberni every September.

Come out and cheer on the many motorcyclists as they travel through the Alberni Valley! If you'd like to submit a donation to the cause, please head to the Port Alberni Toy Run website - portalbernitoyrun.ca

Sightings near the Stamp River Falls 🐻🐟.

In the fall, Port Alberni is an excellent spot for wildlife viewing, especially for observing Black Bears. As salmon return to their natal spawning rivers, these bears come out in droves to feed before hibernation.

Bear Watching Essentials:

👀 Binoculars – the Somass River is about 100 – 120m wide, so having a pair of good binoculars with you will ensure you can get a great view of the bears and all other kinds of interesting wildlife from a distance.

🧣Warm clothes – although our September/October has been quite warm, it is always a good idea to come prepared

As the seasons change from summer to fall, various salmon species, such as Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye, will journey from the open ocean back to their natal streams to spawn.

Did you know that salmon use scents and chemical cues, along with the position of the sun, to navigate with astounding accuracy?

These photos and videos were taken overlooking the Stamp River, an offshoot of the Somass River system that empties into the Alberni Inlet in Port Alberni itself. The Stamp finds its way through stunning countryside to Great Central Lake, which is one of the biggest lakes on Vancouver Island. The entire river system is one of BC's top Salmon migration routes where tens of thousands of fish, typically Sockeye, Coho, Chinook and others, find their way to spawning grounds in order to start the cycle over again 🐟

📍China Creek Falls

Experience this 2.7-km out-and-back trail near Port Alberni, British Columbia. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 40 min to complete.

This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and snowshoeing, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of the day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.

Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

The Hawaii Martin Mars water bomber will take its final flight this Sunday, August 11, from Port Alberni’s Sproat Lake to its new home at the BC Aviation Museum in North Saanich ✈️

It is expected to depart Sproat Lake on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting. We invite you to witness this historic send-off, but please observe from a safe distance. Specific flight details will not be shared for the safety of their crew and the Sproat Lake boating community.

These massive water tankers, the largest fixed-wing water bombers in the world, fought fires in BC and beyond for over half a century, with the ability to drop 6,000 gallons of water. The iconic red and white Hawaii Mars last saw action in 2015 during a 30-day contract with the province.

This is a truly historic event for the Alberni Valley! Safe travels to the crew 👏
