would like to see Midland become the Keewatin's new home.

would like to see Midland become the Keewatin's new home.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO OF “FRIENDS OF Keewatin”
Skyline has sold the Port McNicoll property to a large Toronto developer. They paid $42,000,000 for the land. That does NOT include the park which is being deeded to Tay Township or the Keewatin which they did not want. Skyline's plan was to create a "Maritime Village" representative of the Port McNicoll of the Past. The new developer has different ideas. Skyline are now left with an asset they cannot use. They are very concerned because they have spent millions developing Keewatin into what it is today. A great piece of Canadian Heritage. The question is what do they do with it. It can't stay in Port McNicoll because without the rest of the Heritage village concept Keewatin cannot bring in enough visitors to sustain the maintenance of the 111 year old vessel. Last year Keewatin hosted 12,000 and made $260,000. After expenses that left less than $10,000. It takes a management group of eight and two full time employees to operate the attraction, then numerous volunteers and paid students in the summer. Keewatin is on a dead end street with nothing else in the town to tempt visitors to find it. We spent in excess of $15,000 on advertising on TV, the internet and flyers to bring in those 12,000 souls. There are two other problems. One is that the park which Keewatin just raised and spent $1,000,000 to restore with the dock and board walk is not zoned for tourism. Keewatin has been operating at the pleasure of Tay council. Second, there is little to no involvement from the residents of Port McNicoll. Of the 78 volunteer and management only six come from Port. Most come from Midland, Orillia, Barrie, Tiny and Penetanguishene. As Paul Raymond will tell you himself, the 100th anniversary last summer failed because the town did not support it by involvement or attendance. So what to do with a ship that has its roots in the greater community but cannot survive on its own in out of the way Port McNicoll. The charitable group "Friends of Keewatin" with Skylines support approached Midland about location on its waterfront. Midland has a long history with Keewatin. All the restoration, new additions and repairs to the ship were done in the Midland Ship yard from 1912 until it closed in 1953. Many of the employees of Canadian Pacific including most of the officers came from Midland and are buried in the grave yard on King Street. Midland is about to develop its waterfront to encourage even larger tourism number to our area than come now. Just being in a high traffic area Keewatin would double or triple the visitors. AND IT IS ABOUT THE MONEY. Without a sizable income Keewatin who is demanding in terms of constant restoration, repair and maintenance won't survive another 100 years. Sky line are looking to donate Keewatin, plus a sizable financial support package for 10 years to make sure Keewatin stays in the HEART OF GEORGIAN BAY. There is no other option in our area. What happens if Midland turn it down? KEEWATIN will be gone somewhere else. SKYLINE have had a standing offer from Scottish INTERESTS for Keewatin since they bought her in 2012. Skyline want Keewatin to stay here in the area. Midland is the logical choice. Remember, Keewatin has left a million dollar asset behind in the refurbished and restored Park with full operating public washrooms, a state of the art dock and tons of parking. It’s a fact that when the town asked for participation from residents on what the park should look like only a dozen showed up..Perhaps Paul Raymond and Robin Talbot, both great community spirited citizens could take it on..Maybe they can rally support for another use of the park. I would like everyone who really cares about KEEWATIN to support the offer for Midland to own Keewatin. If you want to save it and keep it in THE HEART OF GEORGIAN BAY that is the only path. Midland Council will consider the offer February 26 2018.
