Fully immersed in marine life!

Jill Heinerth captured these photos diving with us earlier this spring.

From the very small to the very large, the prolific and colourful life in this corner of our blue planet is staggeringly beautiful.

Here is photographic proof that cold water diving is colourful and lush!

"Buttertart"
This beautiful photo of a young wolf eel was taken by our guest Young at one of our favourite dive sites called Buttertart.

This multi-pinnacle dive combines the best of a wall dive, with a rocky reef boulder field, red soft corals, yellow sulphur sponges, glove sponges, white plumose anemones, green eel grass and a lush kelp canopy for your safety stop (or your whole dive because it is beautiful in the shallows!). This is also a great spot to look for rock greenlings in the shallows.

Thanks for sharing your photo Young!

Giant Pacific Octopus!

Jill Heinerth snapped these fabulous photos of a curious octo while diving with us this spring.

This is always one of our favourite species to see while diving in Browning Pass and the surrounding waters. The way they move over the reef and camouflage against different backgrounds always enthrals us and our guests!

Thanks for sharing Jill!

Welcome to God’s Pocket Marine Life Moments!

In this series we will introduce you to some of the species that live in and around the Ocean around God’s Pocket.

Meet the Barnacle-eating Nudibranch!

Barnacle-eating nudibranchs aka Onchidoris bilamellata, are a species of sea slug known for being probably one of the most cutest nudibranchs ever. Shaped like a little dust bunny, these sea slugs can be found in intertidal and shallow subtidal zones along the coasts of Europe and North America, where they feed primarily on barnacles. Their name, "Onchidoris," is derived from the Greek words "oncho" meaning "hook" and "doridos" referring to a type of nudibranch, highlighting their feeding preference for barnacles.

Onchidoris bilamellata possess several adaptations that allow them to feed on barnacles efficiently. They have specialized rasping tongues called radulae equipped with tiny teeth that they use to scrape and consume the soft tissues of barnacles. Additionally, these nudibranchs often camouflage themselves with the shells of their prey, which not only provides protection but also helps them approach barnacle colonies undetected so they can deploy a very, very slow moving nudi sneak attack. Despite their small size, barnacle-eating nudibranchs play a significant role in controlling barnacle populations in their ecosystems, contributing to the balance of intertidal and subtidal communities. They can be seasonally found in large breeding aggregations right under the dock at God’s Pocket.

Welcome to God’s Pocket Marine Life Moments!

In this series we will introduce you to some of the species that live in and around the Ocean around God’s Pocket and Browning Pass.

We are kicking off the year introducing you to the Aeolidia papillosa nudibranch!

The Aeolidia papillosa, commonly known as the shaggy mouse nudibranch, is a tiny marine marvel that effortlessly combines elegance with a touch of whimsy. Found in coastal waters, these sea slugs flaunt a vibrant array of colors and intricate patterns adorning their soft, undulating bodies depending on what they have eaten that day bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “you are what you eat!”.
Donning feathery cerata on their back, resembling a chic fur stole, these nudibranchs aren't just a feast for the eyes—they're voracious hunters. With a keen appetite for sea anemones, Aeolidia papillosa employs a clever strategy by ingesting the stinging cells of its prey and repurposing them for its own defence. It's a biological ballet of survival and style, making the shaggy mouse nudibranch a delightful subject for both marine enthusiasts and those with a penchant for nature's quirky masterpieces.

Blue skies between rain squalls up here at God’s Pocket.

In the winter months we get a lot of rain here on Hurst Island but as the spring showers water the flowers, sunshine starts to shine through and summers up here can be golden and glorious.

We live in a rain forest!

If you have ever visited British Columbia in the west coast of Canada you may be familiar with just how much rain we get here.

The rain keeps our forests green and the waters cold so that incredible life can flourish here above and below the waves.

Sunny days are always special because we don’t always get them. We love that we never take sunshine for granted here!

Two Puget Sound King Crabs on Browning Wall

Like other crabs, Puget Sound king crab males need to patiently wait until females “undress” (moult their hard shells) before they can make their advances. Sometimes this means waiting quite a while so a male will closely guard a female sometimes for days.

This pair were canoodling in a crevasse as a diver floated over head.
