This Saturday Spotlight is Mexico’s Chichén Itzá, one of the best-preserved and biggest archaeological sites on the planet. Constructed by the Maya in the 6th century, it’s a key symbol of pre-Hispanic America. The site occupies around four-square miles and offers a rich cultural heritage for travelers to discover. Located in the Yucatan State of the Yucatan Peninsula, it is about 2 -3 hour drive from Cancun. Chichén Itzá has unique architecture and complex astronomical observations. In 2007 the temple was added to the Unesco World Heritage list. In 2008, although climbing the pyramid was a popular activity for tourists, this was outlawed to protect the ancient stonework. Be sure to visit Chichén Itzá, on your next visit to the Mayan Riviera.

Although managing to escape mainstream tourism, , a landlocked country between Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, is one of the richest in landscape and culture. It spans the Andes Mountains, the Atacama Desert and the Amazon rainforest. The birthplace of the Incan Empire, Bolivia has many must-see places including Lake Titicaca, the Uyuni Salt Flats, the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Tiwanaku and spotting jaguars in Kaa Iya National Park. Talk to your bank and let them know you will be out of the country including your travel dates. Ask them which ATM machines you can use with a reduced or free service charge. Be sure to carry more than one card in case one is compromised, lost or stolen. When your bank knows you’ll be out of the country, they will be less likely to freeze your cards for suspicious activity.

If you have an African safari on your bucket list, might I suggest travelling to the Serengeti. This ultimate African safari destination is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s home to over 5,000 big cats including lions, leopards and cheetahs and one of the best places to spot the “big five” – elephants, rhinos, lions, buffalos and leopards. The Great Migration happens annually here involving around two million wildebeest, zebras and antelopes. Be sure to have your camera ready, as you won’t want to miss a thing & you’ll have memories to last a lifetime.

The Saturday Spotlight this week is the Cherry Blossoms in Japan…the best time to visit Japan to see the Sakura Festival (cherry blossoms) is between April & May. Depending on the region you visit, it’s best to visit the central regions of Japan – Tokyo and Kyoto in late March and early April, but in the northern regions of Japan – Hokkaido in late April or early May. The Sakura as the locals call it, is very important in Japanese culture. The blossoms symbolize the beauty and transience of life. Spring and the cherry blossoms mark the arrival of spring, bringing a sense of renewal and new beginnings after winter. There are a number of different parks in each area to view the blossoms. In Hiroshima be sure to stop at the Peace Memorial Park or Shukkei-en Garden. Ask me about tours to Japan to see the cherry blossoms.

There are 26 countries in the Caribbean Islands. With gorgeous sandy beaches and dreamy crystal blue waters, it’s no wonder they are a long-time favorite destination for holidaymakers around the world. Some of them have UNESCO World Heritage sites including Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua and lots of them have cultural and historical sites. The best time to visit is between December and May during the driest months. Hurricane season starts in June and usually ends in November. Some islands such as Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao are out of the hurricane belt, but can receive stormy weather. Whether you want a 5-star all-inclusive luxury hotel, or a bed and breakfast, you won’t be disappointed when you travel to the Caribbean. With so many islands to choose from, a good alternative is to take a Caribbean cruise where you can visit a number of islands to find out which one is best for you.

We are known as Moai and we were created through the 13th and 16th century. Our location is in Chilean territory on a remote volcanic island in Polynesia and our country's native name is Rapa Nui. We rest on massive stone pedestals called ahus. The population here is just over 5000 people and our electricity is generated by diesel engine. The official languages here are Spanish and Rapa Nui which is similar to Tahitian & Hawaii. Internet access is slow and limited and only available in the town of Hanga Roa. Airplanes fly in fresh fruit & vegetables and ships bring in storable food approximately once a month. Where in the world am I?
