It's that time of year! Our shelled friends are busy selecting the perfect nesting site. Turtles often choose their nesting locations based on a few criteria, such as adequate sunlight, proximity to water, moisture and drainage, not to mention worrying about nest predation and ease of excavation. This sometimes means digging out a few test locations to find the right spot and set up the next generation for success!
At Long Point Eco-Adventures, we are part of a turtle watch program in collaboration with the Long Point Biosphere Wildlife Road Watch, Scott Gillingwater from the London Watershed Conservation Centre and Eco-Kare International.
This program includes a set of incubators in our new lobby to safely incubate thousands of turtles. By incubating these tiny shelled wonders, we are effectively protecting them from nest predation and road mortality, some of the biggest threats these animals face!
Don't forget to keep a watchful eye on our roads for nesting and hatchling turtles and come join us on a Big Creek Paddle to learn about and spot some of these incredible animals!
