Did you know there are more than 520 trails in our region? That number is constantly growing with a number of fabulous organizations and individuals who build and maintain our incredible trail systems. With a sunny weekend coming, you may wonder what hikes or walks you can do in town. Here are some ideas:

📍 Powell River Seawalk 🌊🦅

This 2km long path was built along the Coast, and is always busy with people and dogs! In our opinion, it’s also one of the best spots in town to watch the sunset on a sunny, summer evening. You may even get the chance to see a blue heron or bald eagle! There are parking access points from the Westview Ferry Terminal, down by the South Harbour/Coast Guard Station and the Marine Avenue Viewpoint.

📍 Willingdon Beach Trail 🪵🌲🐿️

Through the Willingdon Beach Campsite you will find the Willingdon Beach Trail, a 4km out and back flat, forested trail. A great place to find some shade when the sun is out, this path could also be considered an outdoor museum, with vintage forestry equipment scattered throughout the trail! You can find signs on either side with information on different vegetation and the various logging history, and you will definitely see a squirrel or two! There is roadside parking along Marine Avenue for trail access.

📍Valentine Mountain ⛰️☀️

Head up to Valentine Mountain if you’re looking for a great view, without having to work too hard to get it. This short but steep walk, consisting mainly of stairs takes you up to an incredible viewpoint for Vancouver Island and our town. It’s the perfect choice if you’re short on time, but don’t want to miss out on seeing what our beautiful region has to offer! Access to this trail is off of Crown Avenue in Cranberry.

📍 Penticton Maze 🌲

Home to a network of walking, running and biking trails, you will find the Penticton Maze, right in the centre of town. A great spot if you’re looking for a forest walk or just want to wander through the various trails, while feeling disconnected from the city. You can access the trails from the top of Westview Street or on Penticton Avenue. And if you don’t want to get lost, you can download the pdf trail map here on our website:https://tourism-powellriver.ca/visit/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/PentictonTrails10000.pdf

~ Texada Island ~

⛴️⛵Hop on the ferry for a 40-minute boat ride through the straight of Georgia and you will find yourself on Texada Island, the largest of the Gulf Islands! The island stretches almost 50km in length, with its northernmost point directly across from Powell River. The ferry takes you right into Blubber Bay, named this as it used to house a whaling station years and years ago, during the peak of the whaling industry. About 10 minutes from the ferry, you’ll find the Texada Island Historical Museum and Archives. Here you can find lots of information on the rich history of mining on the island, complete with displays and an authentic 1890s school room!

🏕️🌲Not only is Texada known for its wealth of minerals, but it is also home to over 250 species of birds and an abundance of beaches and lakes! If you’re looking to camp, check out Shelter Point Regional Park which provides excellent camping facilities and a protected swimming area. If you’re looking for a more rustic camping experience, continue south to the Shingle Beach Recreation site, about 25 minutes from Gillies Bay. This spot provides spectacular views of the coastline and ocean towards Vancouver Island, and has an incredible pebbled beach for those who enjoy rock hunting!

🏖️☕Texada is also home to a Sand Castle Competition, happening this year on July 20-21, 2024! This fun-filled, family weekend is sure to be a hit for everyone. Don’t forget to check out the different cafes, shops and restaurants, and even a Farmers Market held every Sunday from 12-1:30 pm at the Gillies Bay Baseball Field; Texada has it all.

📖Come pick up your Texada Island Visitors Guide at the Powell River Visitor Centre today. We have a variety of other information on the island as well and are happy to answer any questions you may have in person, or, drop a comment on this post! For even more local information, visit https://texada.org/.

Did you know that Powell River and the qathet region are home to Canada’s longest Hut-to-Hut hiking trail? Each year, the Sunshine Coast Trail attracts visitors from all over the world, drawn to the incredible views and unique landscape here on the Sunshine Coast. The 180km trail is maintained by the amazing volunteers at qPaws, who, since 1992 have worked together to build, preserve and promote this extensive trail system. The trail starts at Sarah Point, overlooking the entrance to Desolation Sound Marine Park and ends at Saltery Bay, where a kiosk 200m from the Ferry Terminal marks the end of the 180km trail. Along the way, the trail boasts 13 huts, most with picnic tables/benches and accommodate 8-10 hikers on a first-come first-serve basis. It’s always good to come prepared with a tent though, in the event that the cabins are full, a common occurrence as we get into the nicer summer months!

SCT Guide Books can be purchased at the Powell River Visitor Information Centre and covers all 30 sections of the trail. It’s important to do your research before you go and plan accordingly. Give us a call or pop in to see us at 4760 Joyce Avenue, to purchase your guidebook and your SCT passport!

We would like to acknowledge that the Sunshine Coast Trail passes through traditional, unceded territories of the Tla’amin, Klahoose, Xwémalhkwu, and shíshálh Nations. Visitors of the area are reminded to travel with respect for the land and communities and to support the conservation for future generations.

Can you recognize what point along the SCT the picture below was taken?!
