These delicious Dungeness Crabs can be found in abundance in the local waters, with crabbing season typically lasting from the spring into early fall. Setting up crab traps (or pots) in the sheltered bays around Powell River can lead to a bountiful harvest, especially with a bit of patience and know-how.

Local regulations are essential to follow to ensure sustainable harvesting, including size and daily limits, to keep the crab population healthy for future generations.

These crabs are opportunistic feeders and will munch on a variety of food sources, including clams, small fish, other crustaceans, and even algae. Their diet contributes to a healthy marine ecosystem by keeping populations of other species in check.

Dungeness crabs prefer sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow water, usually less than 100 meters deep. They are often found in estuaries, bays, and the continental shelf. Their ability to burrow into the substrate helps protect them from predators.

What a plentiful day on the water before the end of 2024! We hauled in Dungeness crabs, spot prawns, and a box crab. Even caught a couple little octopi 🐙

🐚 **Dungeness crabs** are not just delicious; they can move sideways up to 1.5 meters per second!

🦐 **Spot prawns** are unique, starting life as males and turning into females as they grow.

🦀 **Box crabs** are also called “shame-faced crabs” because their claws fold up to their faces like they’re feeling shy.
