At the end of a full day I thought I'd raise my feet and relax, but this furry friend (hopefully!) had other plans. Haida friends have shared that Taan (black bear) means "brother of man" in Haida. These taan are a subspecies on Haida Gwaii with massive craniums and molars. They are considered a keystone species because of their transportation of salmon remains into the surrounding forests.
Taan are abundant here. There have never been any reported attacks on Haida Gwaii and we want to keep it that way. Please be prepared and have a whistle, bear-banger, and/or bear spray with you when exploring forests, and always keep your food in air tight containers. You do not want to surprise one of these magnificent creatures!

32C on Haida Gwaii with northerly winds bringing thick fog to North Beach to escape the heat, but the blow holes perform no matter the weather.
