Grand Canyon South Rim:
🏜️ I had muted expectations since some travellers had said that it was not that awe inspiring. I have to totally disagree-it was breathtaking!
🏜️ Cost is $35 USD per car
🏜️ 14 miles of paved trail can be walked from the Visitor Centre
🏜️ There are some trails that are possible down into the Canyon only during the summer months and others until Nov 30
🏜️ Temperature on the day of my visit was -10 C at 9 am but had warmed to 5 C by 1pm
🏜️ Seeing elk as we wandered through the National park was also a highlight
🏜️ Parking lots fill up
🏜️ Arrive to South rim gates by 9 am to avoid long waits
🏜️ 446 km long x 16 km (average) wide x 1.8 km deep
🏜️ Colarado River was hard to see running through it
🏜️ Colarado River cuts through the rock by the thickness of a piece of paper a year

A road trip east of Flagstaff on Route 66:
🌵 Winslow, AZ made famous by the Eagles song Take it Easy
🌵 Town has embraced the fame with a fun photo op for visitors on the corner of Route 66 and N Kinsley Ave in 1999
🌵 There are 2 statues on the corner of the 2 cowriters of the song-Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey
🌵 The mural on the building at the corner shows a reflection in the window of a girl in a red flatbed Ford
🌵 There is also an actual red flatbed Ford permanently parked on the corner
🌵 Holdbrook, AZ is home to the still in operation Wigwam Motel which inspired the Cozy Cone Motel in Disney’s Cars movie
🌵 Petrified wood and fossils are common in the gift stores in this area

Antelope Canyon, AZ is a spectacular slot canyon on the Navajo Nation that I loved visiting.
🌅 It can only be accessed with a tour guide and permit
🌅 I would highly recommend Antelope Canyon Tours (antelopecanyon.com)-our tour guide was excellent!
🌅 Tours sell out weeks in advance especially during busier times
🌅 There are 2 possible tours-Upper Canyon which I did and Lower Canyon
🌅 Midday March through October is considered to be the absolute best time to visit
🌅 The canyon gets it name from the antelope who used to be plentiful and graze in this area
🌅 The canyon was formed by water that flowed through its walls over years and years
🌅 Occasionally the canyon will still fill with a flash flood from rain storms to the south of the area-you can see a few of the photos have trees and debris trapped above from such storms
🌅 Weather is monitored carefully and occasionally tours are cancelled for visitors’ safety

The longest section of the original Route 66 runs through Arizona. Here are some of my impressions and tidbits as I drove from Flagstaff to Kingman:
🚘 Once known as Main Street of America.
🚘 The geography is fascinating as you drive through National forest with yellow watch out for elk placards to large expansive plateau with grass and grazing cattle with the horizon dotted with mountains of various heights and composition.
🚘 A glimpse of the pre-1978 completion of the interstate life and business in this state can still be had
🚘 Inspiration of Disney movie Cars came from this stretch of Route 66
🚘 My mind kept fluctuating from revelling in imagination of life here in times past to being so struck by how livelihood and life has so changed for those still living here
🚘 So thankful to get to see this slice of Americana as I have always wanted to

Fun fact: the only teal/turquoise coloured “golden” arches in the world (of approximately 36 000 locations) are found in Sedona, AZ.
☀️ The city bylaws prevented the traditional yellow from being used
☀️The city officials want the colours used to reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding nature.

Chapel of the Holy Cross is a beautiful experience with its majestic backdrop near Sedona, AZ.
💒 Commissioned by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, local rancher and sculptor
💒 Inspiration came in 1932 from Empire State Building
💒 Originally, Budapest was to be its location but due to WWII this was changed
💒 Completed in 1956
💒 Cost $3 million USD
💒 Free to visit

Today’s hike up Cathedral Rock outside of Sedona, Arizona was SO worth the climb for the vista at the top! I highly recommend ☀️
🪨 1.2 miles up and back
🪨 750 ft elevation
🪨 Temperature 12-16 C
🪨 Parked in designated area then took free shuttle to trailhead
🪨 Arrived to parking lot by 8:30, took 8:45 shuttle, started climb at 9am, enjoyed top for 1/2 hr and were back to shuttle by 11:30.
🪨 Took approximately 1 hr each direction.
🪨 Considered to be intermediate in difficulty- stairs in the rocks followed by some steeper clambering using hands and then more stairs.
🪨 Views approximately 1/3 of the way up after the first series of steps were wonderful too-in case you want to opt out of the steeper portion.

While in Phoenix… I had to take a Waymo. This is a robocar or self-driving or autonomous driving vehicle (no driver!) that you order on their app to take you somewhere like you would an Uber or Lyft 🚙
🚙 Approx 200 Jaguar vehicles used in Phoenix area.
🚙 Worked seamlessly.
🚙 Only available in LA, SF and Phoenix right now.
🚙 Very futuristic feeling.
🚙 Operation in Phoenix started in 2022
🚙 315 square miles is the range in Phoenix area.
