First Day of Summer
🏆 Amelia Earhart had tried to keep her plans to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic a secret. But when she landed in Saint John, NB, on May 19th, 1932, the secret was was already out, and the city was abuzz with excitement to see the famous pilot.
As soon as she landed at the old Saint John airport, crowds surged to catch a glimpse of the 34-year-old record-breaking pilot. Enthusiastic Saint Johners climbed all over her plane, hoping to see her.
Amelia, amused by their excitement, sat on top of her airplane, chatting and answering their questions – except about her plans. “My plans are infinite,” she said.
The Telegraph-Journal captured the interaction, printing questions from the crowd and her responses:
“Are you worried at all?”
“No, it would be awful to worry,” she replied.
“What will you eat during the flight?”
“Just some tomato juice,” she answered.
“How about your husband? Does he object?”
“I do what I want to do,” she replied with a smile, adding “I don’t interfere with his publishing and he doesn’t interfere with my flying.”
Amelia spent the night at the Admiral Beatty Hotel, where every detail of her stay became a news story. The headlines painted a picture of her time in Saint John: “Amelia Earhart Dines On Fresh Grilled Saint John Lobster,” “Amelia Earhart Goes To Bed At 10pm,” and, in big letters: “SHE LIKES OUR CITY!”
The next morning, she left for Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, her last stop before her historic flight.
From Harbour Grace it took her fourteen hours and forty-five minutes to fly to Ireland, becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Her triumphant flight was challenging, with a crack in the fuselage, broken instruments, and ice forming on her plane.
The Evening Times Globe celebrated with a simple headline: “SHE MADE IT.” Everyone knew exactly who they were talking about.

🔸This ancient Roman beacon, the eldest surviving lighthouse within England and among the most ancient globally, stands on Dover's south-eastern coast in Kent.
Originating from around 46–50 AD under Emperor Claudius' rule, it presents a modest stature of 25.4 metres compared to contemporary lighthouses. Nonetheless, it was considered a monumental structure of its era. Constructed from local flint and mortar, it played a pivotal role in Roman commerce and military endeavors, serving as an essential navigation aid for ships approaching the shore with its beacon. Despite enduring nearly two millennia, the original Roman masonry on its sea-facing side shows signs of erosion, and it currently rises to a height of 19 metres.
