GREAT NEWS FROM THE LEGISLATURE YESTERDAY: Peter Bevan-Baker, MLA's motion, "Keeping ATVs off the Confederation Trail" came up for debate and a vote in the Legislature yesterday - and was supported by all present with the only exception being Hal Perry, leader of the Opposition and MLA for Tignish-Palmer Road.

While motions in the legislature are not binding on the government, the overwhelming passage of this motion - supported by all members of government including the Premier and the Minister of Transportation - should put to bed any notion of ATVs getting access to the Confederation Trail for the foreseeable future.

This would not have been possible without all those who have made their voices heard on this issue. During debate on the motion, multiple MLAs mentioned that their inboxes had been flooded with emails from people wanting ATVs kept off the Trail, and that this was indeed the largest source of communication from the public that many of them had experienced so far.

Together, we gave the government thousands of reasons why it would not be a good idea to allow ATVs on the Confederation Trail!

We will continue to monitor this issue, of course, and be ready to rise again to defend the Confederation Trail should any other threats arise in the future. But today, we celebrate and that our political leaders for supporting an ATV-free Confederation Trail!

Please take a minute to sign the petition on Change.org to Preserve the Confederation Trail for walkers, runners and cyclists.

The Confederation Trail was Prince Edward Islandโ€™s first section of the Trans Canada Trail, completed in August of 2000.

It is currently jointly designed by the Government of Prince Edward Island and Trans Canada Trail as a greenway, allowing for a number of ways for people to use the trail, including cycling and hiking but excluding the use of motorized vehicles.

The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking feedback from Islanders to determine policy for future use of the Trail. We encourage all Islanders to complete the survey and have your voices heard on maintaining the greenway status of the Confederation Trail.
