Some good news from our local waters! The Southern Resident orca calves appear to be doing well!

Researchers with the Marine Mammal Research Unit (MMRU) at UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries in partnership with the Hakai Institute spent three weeks in August and September monitoring pods of southern residents and their cousins, the northern resident killer whales.

Researchers say the drone footage has also shown the southern resident pods' two calves appear to be doing well.

Happy Shark Week!

It’s the beginning of the Discovery Channel’s most famous weeks!

When people think of the Pacific Northwest, they don’t usually think of sharks - but they’re in our waters too!!!

Take a look at this example caught just recently off the coast of BC!

The two-metre male salmon shark caught the crew's attention when it started brushing itself on a barnacle-encrusted log repeatedly.

NEW Bigg's Killer Whale catalogue now available for download! See link below and then click blue box on upper right "Download full text PDF".

"Photo-identification Catalogue, Population Status, and Distribution of Bigg’s Killer Whales known from Coastal Waters of British Columbia, Canada": In addition to enabling the IDs of the whales, the publication reports on the population size and distribution.

Includes: "A total of 206 mature individuals that were alive in 2018 were encountered at least once since 2014 and were documented during at least seven years or 11 or more encounters during the study period. Their offspring and other inferred maternally related kin include an additional 143 individuals. This population subset of 349 individuals has grown at an observed average annual rate of 4.1% since 2012 due to relatively low mortality and the birth of over 100 calves during this time period. Identification images of the dorsal fins, saddle patches, and eyepatches of all of these individuals as well as calves born to date in 2019 are provided. Details on the birth years, s*x, maternal ancestry, social cohesion, and distribution of these individuals are also provided, when known."

There’s no shortage of species that are strange and fascinating living below the ocean’s surface, but every so often we’re reminded here in the Lower Mainland of just how close some of the creatures come to home.

Case in point, a recently-shared online video shows a giant Pacific octopus on the hunt near Bowen Island – just a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay and visible from West Vancouver.

There's no shortage of strange and fascinating species living below the ocean's surface near Vancouver, but this octopus is certainly something to see.

Wowsa!!

In the category of things you may see while visiting the Sunshine Coast...

A gigantic “fried egg” jellyfish was just spotted off the Sunshine Coast in BC.

While jellyfish are very common around the Vancouver area and the Pacific Coast, but it’s been a while since a fried egg — or egg-yolk — jellyfish that big has been sighted by locals.

A huge fried egg jellyfish was spotted by locals just off Sunshine Coast. Ocean Wise's in-house jellyfish expert Mackenzie Neal tells us all about them.
