Hi Edmonton friends please consider sharing your Mountain Ash Berries with Wild North to help feed rescued winter birds. Thank you . 🌲🦅

Donations needed: We need Mountain Ash berries!

Many songbirds, such as American Robins and Waxwings, consume Mountain Ash berries so we like to keep some on hand all winter for when we have them in our care. We are looking for donation of Mountain Ash berries, but, the berries have to have gone through a frost cycle and have to be squishy when touched. We ask for this specifically because if they are still hard and before frost, the birds simply will not eat them!

If you are able to collect Mountain Ash berries in this condition and donate them to WILDNorth, that would be a huge help! Please leave them on the branch and bag them if possible and drop them off at our hospital location (12515 128th street NW, Edmonton) any day of the week between 9am-4pm.

Thank you!

The vote is on in Strathcona County for the favourite community bird and the race is between the Pileated Woodpecker (our pick) and the Bluejay. Although we also love our cheeky peanut loving blue mimic too.

In 2022, Strathcona County was just the 12th municipality in Canada to become certified as a Bird Friendly City! To celebrate, we've been collecting nominations and votes from community members to determine what the County's official bird should be. Sixteen birds have battled it out and now....

We had so much fun yesterday morning with these enthusiastic and fun birders. We had deep talks about the mental and emotional benefits of slowing down to enjoy nature . The Michif word for slow is “papaychiiw”. We also had lots of laughs and a few surprise moments when we spotted a Bald Eagle 🦅 flying towards us above Telford Lake in Leduc . This was an amazing birding location and we had a total of 21 bird species spotted including a juvenile Pied Billed Grebe , baby Ruddy Ducks , an eclipse plumage Blue winged Teal and our favourite American White Pelicans ! 😊♾🦅🦬 Maarsii to our new birding pals .

Can’t wait to bird this Sunday at Telford Lake in Leduc! Telford Lake is one of the nicest birding spots around with lots of Ruddy Ducks , Yellow Warbler’s Red Necked Grebes , American White Pelican’s galore and if we’re lucky we will see a Black Crowned Night Heron or two! There have been 141 species of birds recorded here. Send us a message on Messenger for the eventbrite ticket link . See you Sunday ! 😊🦆🍃

A new short video from last month when we visited Lundbreck Falls. We went down to the water photograph some American Dippers up close . They were bobbing all over the place and on the way there we were treated to a nice fly over by a Bald Eagle. 🦅 Lundbreck Falls is not far from Waterton National Park and Pincher Creek, and is in Treaty 7 territory. Lundbreck Falls is a tributary of the Oldman River .
We were so happy to be invited to participate in the Peigan Friends along the River fish rescue by its founder Harley Bastein of the Piikani Nation. Harley started this fish rescue in 1990 rescuing fish trapped in an irrigation canal west of Fort Macleod . Harley and his community of volunteers have rescued over 250000 fish in the last 30 years carrying them in buckets to holding tanks where they get released back into the Oldman River. We are happy to support this organization and didn’t get to participate this year because of a last minute schedule change for the shut off of the canals but we’re looking forward to getting our hands and waders in the water with Harley and his crew from Piikani Nation, Kainai Nation and friends and neighbours from Pincher Creek and Crowsnest pass next year . Proud to be part of a conservation community that cares for Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout. Proud to know a strong community leader who cares for people and land and we will be happy to contribute a percentage funds from birding trips in Southern Alberta next spring to his organization . 🐟🦬 🦅

The Michif word for Heron is “Aen bittor”
I almost didn’t see this Juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron hunting . I enjoyed watching this family of Black Crowned Night Herons fish . They have an adaptation in their eyes giving them their piercing red hue that allows them to fish at night . One of the many elusive species of birds that calls Alberta home.
