Happy International Women's Day! Today and every day, we are filled with gratitude for the remarkable women who make our journeys so meaningful.

To our wonderful female travellers who bring curiosity, courage, and joy to every adventure.

To the local guides, community leaders, and local experts who share with us their knowledge, wisdom, and unique perspectives of these lands.

These connections between women across cultures and continents remind us that adventure is transformative when shared. Creating space for these meaningful experiences, conversations, and collaborations is what drives us every day.

Thank you to all the women in our travel family for sharing your strength, stories, and spirit with us.

The historic village of Telegraph Cove is a cornerstone of the north Vancouver Island experience and has been an essential stop for all of our travellers since our first tours in 2021.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the devastating fire on December 31st that destroyed a portion of the boardwalk along with several beloved landmarks: including the The Whale Interpretive Centre, which housed Western Canada's largest collection of marine mammal skeletons, along with the historic Old Saltery Pub, Killer Whale Cafe, North Island Kayak and Prince of Whales offices and staff housing, and Wastell Manor.

Our thoughts are with Telegraph Cove Resort and the Graham family, who have stewarded this special place for decades, along with the North Island community and the businesses impacted - North Island Kayak - Telegraph Cove, BC, Prince of Whales Whale Watching, WIC, and Tide Rip Tours.

As this resilient community looks to rebuild, we stand with them in hope and solidarity.

For more information, follow Telegraph Cove Resort & Campground.

For our travellers visiting the North Island in 2025, we will be sharing updates in the coming months as they are made available.

Introducing our first annual Impact Report! 🌎️

We are incredibly proud to share this report which so perfectly captures our passion and commitment to sustainable and regenerative tourism in all that we do.

Featured in this year's Impact Report is our strategic approach to sustainable travel, including the 4 key initiatives where we can drive the most meaningful impact, plus our alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

We then detail our key impacts and notable achievements from 2024, with highlights including:

🌿 Measuring, analyzing, and offsetting our Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions through the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project.

🐋 A growing partnership with the Marine Education and Research Society () including sponsoring a humpback whale.

🧡 Officially signing on with the Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund (via ), where we have committed to a contribution of $25 per traveller towards Indigenous tourism development, training, and education across Canada.

🎓️ Advancing sustainable tourism education as Associate Faculty at Royal Roads University, where our Founder & CEO led the graduate-level Responsible Tourism Field Study to North Vancouver Island centred around Regenerative Tourism in practice.

🔗 You can find the report linked below, and on our website under 'About'.

We encourage you to dive into the report when you have a quiet moment this holiday season. Perhaps it may spark reflection on your own footprint as a traveller, and how we can work to improve our collective impact in the coming year.

There is much work to be done, and we acknowledge that this report and our current initiatives are only the beginning.

We welcome you to join us in reimagining travel as a force for connection, understanding and positive change ✨️

🌿 This year, we are proud to have measured, analyzed, and fully offset our Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions through the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project in British Columbia. With sustainable, regenerative tourism at the heart of our business, this is an important step towards our goal of carbon neutrality.

The trees and soil in the Great Bear Rainforest store more carbon per hectare than any of the world’s tropical rainforests, including the Amazon.

🐻 The Great Bear Forest Carbon Project - a collaboration between Coastal First Nations and the BC Government - increases carbon sequestration stocks through conversion to protected forests that were previously available for commercial logging.

This project also preserves critical ecosystems for endangered species like the Spirit Bear while generating direct economic benefits for Indigenous communities through carbon offset revenue.

🌎️ What are Scope 1 & 2 emissions? Scope 1 includes our direct GHG emissions from passenger vans during guided tours, while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from electricity and heating for our office in Squamish.

After measuring our emissions, we can identify areas to reduce consumption, and where reduction is not possible, we proceed with purchasing verified carbon offsets.

It was important to us that we chose an offsetting project that had direct benefit to the ecosystems and economy here in Western Canada - the land on which we live and travel.

➡️ The next step for us will be measuring our Scope 3 emissions, which includes flights, accommodations and activities, employee travel, waste disposal, and trip supplies.

As a traveller or a small business, you can calculate and offset your emissions through organizations like . For a more comprehensive analysis, check out and .

📝 Stay tuned for our full 2024 Impact Report - coming next week!

One of the fun ways we connected with the land and created a positive impact on our recent Responsible Tourism Field Study was participating in the ‘Live the Wild Pledge’.

is dedicated to educating visitors about marine plastics and empowering them with effective solutions to protect our precious shorelines. It was created by with support from .

How does the pledge work? Visitors are encouraged to pick up a custom collection bag from one of 6 locations on the North Island; enjoy the beauty of our shorelines and trail systems while collecting beach debris along the way; and return the collected debris for recycling ♻️ to then receive an incentive card with discounts to local businesses - it’s a win for all!

Our students on this tour collected several bags of debris from San Josef Bay in Cape Scott Provincial Park, including plastic bags, bottles and cans, camp debris, fishing line, and more.

Thank you to our guide, June from for joining in the cleanup!

🌿 The concept of visitor ‘pledges’ is something we often discuss in the field of sustainable tourism. Pledges are a great way to share stories and educate travellers while building a feeling of connection and respect towards the destination.

With more travellers seeking sustainable experiences, they’re also looking for ways to give back and tangibly support the people and places they’ve visited.

Initiatives like this pledge and shoreline cleanups are an easy, fun, and meaningful first step that everyone can take part in. ✅

Meet Ron & Janet, proud members of the Homalco First Nation (Xwémalhkwu) and guides with in Campbell River.

On our recent Responsible Tourism Field Study with , we spent the afternoon learning about Homalco’s tour business and connecting with the land.

After cruising the Discovery Passage in search of wildlife, Ron and Janet brought us to the old village of Church House (Aupe). Here we walked and talked, hearing stories of the past including the old residential school, church and settlements. Despite its challenging past, it was clear that this place is sacred to the Homalco Nation and we were interested to hear of the new healing centre planned for the site.

Then, standing on the hill overlooking the ocean, surrounded by dense forest of cedar and hemlock, Janet taught us about weaving. We each had our own strips of cedar bark and made a bracelet, with the intent to gift it to someone we love.

Even in the rain, the group was deeply engaged and loved the chance to make something from nature while connecting to this special place.

Thank you, Ron and Janet for such a memorable experience!

Over the next year, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, promises to be more vibrant and frequent than it has been in over a decade.

We are in what scientists call the 'solar maximum' - the height of solar activity in the sun's 11-year cycle, estimated to peak between mid-2024 and mid-2025.

While the Northern Lights are typically most visible in the world's northern regions, closer to the magnetic pole, this increased solar activity has led to vibrant displays as far south as the US and Mexico in the past few months.

In our latest blog, we learn the science behind the Northern Lights, its cultural and spiritual significance, and why the Yukon is the perfect destination to view the lights in 2025.

09/30/2024

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30th) is a call for all Canadians to confront uncomfortable truths about our past and the residential school system; to create meaningful conversations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people; and to witness the incredible strength, culture, and knowledge of Indigenous communities today.

We are here to listen, to learn, and to work together for a better future.

One of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action recommends promoting Indigenous tourism for cultural education and economic development.

Travelling, and now operating a travel business, has been the greatest learning journey in my life. I feel honoured to work with numerous Indigenous communities and businesses in BC and the Yukon, and to be continually learning and growing alongside our travellers.

The education never stops. The conversations only deepen, and the ways in which we can be an ally continue to expand.

A few resources that I recommend to everyone: The University of Alberta via Coursera offers a free online course, ‘Indigenous Canada’.

Also check out , , and .

Wishing you all a day of reflection and meaningful conversations.
